Effect Agroforestry
Dr. Carol Cross
has seen lots of soccer while traveling in Latin America.
In 1997 she traveled to Honduras with her then 6 year old
grandson. He was exposed to soccer by the local boys and
was the butt of ridicule because he could not play soccer.
Chris, her grandson said he did not want to go back to Honduras until he could play soccer. Since then Chris has played in many youth leagues including AYSO, Triple A, Dan Gaston Soccer League.
He is also a youth peer coach with Soccer for Life, her non profit organization. He has served as ball boy for the African Lions adult international soccer team. He has played with the West Valley Soccer Club and played on an indoor adult soccer team. Presently he is a certified referee and will be a vital part of Dr. Cross's Honduras soccer programs beginning June 2005.
Dr. Cross was
the one carrying Chris to soccer practices, soccer games and
soccer activities, and she became a passionate lover of the
beautiful game. She became more and more aware of the
growing
popularity
of the sport. As a result she decided to research this
soccer phenomena. In so doing she discovered the tremendous
rapid growth of this sport.
At the same time, she noticed other trends, mainly the growth of Sport Adventure. And she watched many developing countries struggle to build their economies around ecotourism. And saw many people were more interested in the sport and adventure aspect of tourism rather than the environment. She put it all together in an internal memo and decided that now was the ideal time to launch a new business focusing on the tremendous growth opportunity in soccer and sports Adventure Tourism.
Dr. Cross has accepted the position of CEO of The International Sports Adventure Institute (ISAI). ISAI is involved in marketing soccer camps, soccer programs and promoting Sports Adventure Tourism as a method of sustainable development. Because of Dr. Cross's love for soccer, the beautiful game, she has joined with other soccer enthusiasts to develop this firm. Find out about The Power Of Sports & The Thrill Of Sports Adventure.
Bring Your Team To Honduras For A Soccer Tour
She recently formed with Dr. Ramon Dario Argueta and Dr. Marco Antonio Sorto a Honduras firm, the Compañia de Deportes Y Turismo (CODET) , S de R. L. to develop a young soccer team Atletico Lenca, with a fifteen year dream of winning the Intercontinental Cup. In addition CODET is facilitating the international marketing program of Athletico Esperanzano a second division professional team in Honduras.
Carol Cross was born Carolyn Marie Cross in a small rural village in the US South, July 14, 1939. She came from Afro-American and Native American people. Her Afro-American ancestors came from South Carolina in a wagon train in 1884. They intermarried with the Cherokee Indians in the area, forming an Afro-Indian culture.
From early childhood she loved trees, preferring to be alone in the woods or riding her horse, with a book in her pocket. When she was eleven years old she decided she wanted to be an ecologist. She learned about herbal medicines from the oldest Native American and AfroHeritage people in the community.
During her early schooling she attended a one room schoolhouse in the woods. She spent her childhood roaming the woods and plains, collecting wild blackberries, running a rabbit trapline and living the wild free life all Afro-Indian children of her community knew. Her love of trees, nature and outdoors began then.
She attended
segregated schools in Arkansas and Chicago, Illinois where she
attended Corpus Christi Catholic High School and graduated from
Thornton Township High School.
She received a
bachelor of Education from Chicago State University in 1962. She
served as an elementary teacher in the Chicago Public Schools and
achieved tenure. She was certified as an Outdoor Education
Specialist.
In 1968 she moved to Oregon to attend graduate school in biology. In December 1975, she received a doctorate in biology from the University of Oregon. Her specialty was theoretical population ecology. She taught at the University of Oregon. While at the U of O, she worked with Asian activists to save the Asian Studies program. She served as a Mined Land Reclamation Specialist with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.
She owned her own information on demand business called Cross International Infotransfer Systems in Washington, DC between 1981-1987. During this time she traveled regularly to Honduras. She was a consultant with many firms and agriculturists there, working in agroforestry. She served as a Mined Land Reclamation Specialist with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
In 1987 she moved back to the
South to begin
work in rural
economic development, culminating in working with farmers,
mayors, and others in rural economic development projects. She
participated in workshops and forums on rural development there.
She has written and published the Leucaena Production Handbook and other agroforestry books. Dr. Cross has authored "Leucaena for
Rural Economic Development in the Tropics", "Kenaf for
Rural Economic Development in the US South".
She held a conference in 1984 in Bogotá, Colombia called" Computers and Information in the Public Works". As a result she authored a book titled, "Creating a Science and Public Technology Transfer Network in the Andean Group". She was also a invited delegate to a conference on Technology Transfer and Subcontracting in Houston Texas. This conference was sponsored by the Engineering Export Division of the government of India.
She has continued up to the present date traveling to Honduras planting and working with Leucaena. She began growing Leucaena in Honduras in 1984. planting Leucaena leucocephala in the Bay Islands on several farms. She has also worked with Leucaena in Yoro and other states in Honduras. She is the author of the "Leucaena Production Handbook", a volume handbook written at a farmer level. The Leucaena Production Handbook is available in both English and Spanish. While teaching at Howard University, she researched methods for rapid germination of Leucaena combined with buffel grass, Cenchrus ciliaris. But she soon returned to her true love, agricultural consulting in Honduras.
In 1997, Dr. Cross moved to Arizona where she began her involvement in the field of sports and Sports Adventure Tourism as a sustainable economic development method for developing economies. She emphasizes the importance of the facilitation of rapprochement (cordial or amiable relationships) within developing economies.
Since coming to Arizona, she became very involved with Toastmasters International. She holds the Advanced Toastmasters - Silver certification and has been an area governor. She has also served as Mentoring and Membership chairman for District 3 (the state of Arizona) for Toastmasters International.
Dr. Cross continues to travel to Honduras to plant Leucaena trees and teach agroforestry. She is planning to relocate to Honduras in 2005 in order to develop a research project on Leucaena, develop the Honduras Youth Soccer Project , open two soccer academies, LigaAmericas Soccer Masters Academy and La Ceiba Football Academy and work with both Atletico Lenca and Athletico Esperanzano. She will be experimenting with hybridizing the cold tolerant Leucaena she developed in Arizona with Leucaena leucocephala to develop a mountain Leucaena.
Additionally she is offering a series of Leucaena Effect Agroforestry workshops and seminars on for Latin American entrepreneurs in Spanish and English. She is actively involved in Proyecto HonduCopa 2006, a project designed to raise the funds for sending the Honduran National team to the 2006 World Cup. Through ISAI, she will be offering an international soccer camp in Honduras in the summer of 2005.
Her Honduran firm, CODET will be holding a conference called ReforestHaiti, to develop a program for reforestation, community building and Renewable Energy development in Haiti. The conference will be held in February 2007 in Siguatepeque, Honduras.
Soccer, Leucaena and Sports Adventure Tourism has become her passion. The development of soccer facilities and Sports Adventure Tourism facilities has become a vital part of her business life. She is constantly speaking in Arizona about the need for more facilities for youth sports in Arizona.
Because sports and Sports Adventure Tourism are coalescing into the development of one Global Sports Economy, it is vital to develop successful cross cultural communication facility. One way Dr. Cross is working to bridge the cultural gap is the development of a new of the Arboleña cyberspace world as a way to solve the problem inherent in the developing a Global Sports Economy.
