(Roberto comes into the office of Profesora Calderon and remains standing)

Alicia - Please sit down.

Roberto - Yes, Profesora Calderon.

Alicia - The course is over. You passed very well, the highest in the class.

Roberto - (standing up) Thank you very much. I'll be leaving now.

Alicia -- Am I ugly? Do I have a smell you are allergic to? Or has listening to me all term made you hate the sound of my voice?

Why must you rush away before you even find out what I want to talk to you about?

Roberto (still standing) You are a Calderon!

Alicia - Are Calderons not citizens of Arboleña? Are we not entitled to the same courtesies I have seen you extend to beggars in the streets? Often I have seen you giving them a coronel. Once I saw you give your lunch to a street child. You were kind to them. But you cannot bear to be in my presence because I am a Calderon.

Roberto - Please Profesora Calderon.

Alicia - My name is Alicia. The class is over.

Roberto - (sitting down with a sigh) I have attempted to complete my work to your satisfaction. What is it you want from me?

Alicia Uses The Expanding Permitteds Method of Leadership

To be a leader is to carry the hearts of our followers in our hands. We must handle them gently. One negative word from a leader, and a follower can be devastated. One positive word of encouragement can cause an employee to try again and eventually succeed. As leaders we have great power. But along with the power comes responsibilities. Some of the responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.

• Help others potentiate;
• Facilitate their growth;
• Make them feel important;
• Build on small successes;
• Reward any aspect of good behavior;
• Make the person aware of his unique contribution to life.

Self-esteem is our permission to try, to achieve, and to reach out to our world. Self-esteem is not how smart you are, how pretty you are, nor how good an athlete you are. Self-esteem is your inner spiritual knowing of whom you are, what you have to offer the world, and your fight to share your gifts with your world.

Many cultures indulge in self-esteem destructive behavior to prevent members of other groups from feeling free to share their gifts with the world. Racism, sexism,  ageism, worrying about people's gender or sexual preferences, are all tools to prevent people from feeling they have the permission to achieve.

In some schools, fraternity members are allowed to drink even if there is a no drinking policy. They endanger people's lives through hazing. Fraternity members are given tacit permission to endanger others.

What Will Alicia provide to her followers?

Leaders are the keys to the personal success of their followers. In order to facilitate the growth of her followers,  through the Arboleña novellas, she will need to establish the programs, methods and systems they need to maximize their productivity.  Her goals are to facilitate productivity and enhance growth in her followers as she:

• develops self esteem building based programs for new people to keep them;
• devises methods to communicate with workers through a wide variety of speech, print and internet-based media;
• utilizes all available learning programs that enable them to empower workers to find success in their workgroup activities;
• establishes recognizable and achievable growth steps for workers so they remain engaged and active in the organization
• undergos training programs that enable her as a leader to personally grow in her ability to build self-esteem in her fellow workers
• develops recognition systems for workers which create incentives resulting in more active participation in the workgroups
• finds her own ways of self reward to build personal self-esteem so she can give to and support the growth of workers instead of fearing the loss of her present status
• uses available media such as the internet to pull the group members into interactive processes that deeply involve and engage them
• finds ways to use and communicate the structural framework of the organization so workers know where they can fit in
• shares insights into what the opportunities for success and advancement are in the group
• creates involvement systems that bring workgroup members actively into the meaning of the organization
• shares the superordinate goal of the organization as a focus for the members' workgroup and personal growth
• works side by side with workgroup members to create a real and meaningful, life-engaging community that nurtures and supports them as they grow in skills and participation.
