(Roberto goes overseas to the USA to get his CPA. Roberto has made many friends. One of them is a Latin American girl that he has been casually dating. Her name is Anna. She is from Venezuela from a upper middle class family. She is secretly engaged to a Venezuelan petroleum engineer working in the Persian Gulf.
Roberto and Anna spend a great deal of time together as a protective measure. Roberto wants to marry in Arboleña. Anna does not want to face temptations while waiting to announce her engagement to her fiancee.)
Roberto (calls her on the phone) - Hello, Anna. What are you doing tonight?
Anna - I'm so glad you called Roberto. I guess I've been sitting here feeling sorry for myself.
Roberto - There's no time for that in this program. It's so rigorous. I thought I was a good accountant. But I can see how Americans are so rich. They really have to know their stuff. This CPA course is for real.
Anna - I know. But sometimes you need a break.
Roberto - Well, I thought you and I could go over some of the points in the last chapter together. You know we made a pact we'd help each other. That way you don't get so lonely you do something foolish. And I need a friend, someone to talk with who understand how I feel about my country. Most of these Americans see things differently.
Anna - Right. Coming from Venezuela, I understand our culture and how our lives are. I'm just grateful to have you for a friend.
Roberto - Sometimes, studying with you, talking and laughing is the only time I really feel happy.
Anna - I'm glad we found each other. And after I get home I will stay in contact. We can work together you know. With the Internet we can stay in contact all he time. And when Paulo gets home from the Persian Gulf, I want you to come to Venezuela to the wedding.
Roberto - Of course. I look forward to it.
Anna- Don't you ever want to marry? I never see you talking about anyone from Arboleña? Aren't you about the age to marry.
Roberto - I could have married many times. I just haven't found the right woman (An image of Alicia Calderon flashes in his mind. He angrily thrusts it away). Don't worry I'll find someone. Maybe one of your sisters in Venezuela.
Anna - I've got one sister who is a school teacher. She's quiet and reserved, but very nice. I bet she would like a strong man like you.
Roberto - I'll meet you in the library in 10 minutes. We'll see if we can master this section.
Anna - See you Roberto.
(Near the end of the last term, a guest lecturer is announced from the OAS. She comes into the small class. It is Alicia Calderon.
After the lecture she speaks to students. Roberto leaves before she can talk to him. He has a date with Anna to go to a movie. He goes back to his apartment to wit for Anna to come by and pick him up)
Anna drives up in her red Ferrari. She blows her horn and jumps out of the car, laughing. Roberto bounds down the stairs and run up to her. They embrace.
Anna - Corazon!
Roberto -- Mi Querida!
Just then he looks up and there is Alicia Calderon standing there, full of fury.
