Sample Dialog Five Of The Novella, "The Passions Of Luis"

Read the Weekly background

Roberto - Profesora Calderon. What are you doing here? Did I miss something today in class? What is wrong?

Alicia turns and walks away without speaking.

Anna - Who is she?

Roberto - (Watching the angry straight back of Alicia stalk away). That's the woman I'm going to marry. My God, what did I say? I must be crazy to even think that.

Anna- Well, you better start making it up with her.

Roberto - Forget about her.  We are going to the movies. I must be crazy to say that.

Anna - She seems to be interested in you.

Roberto - You'll understand when I explain it. She's not just an aristocrat. In Arboleña, she is the aristocrat of aristocrats. She's pure Spanish. She can't be interested in a Latino like me.

Anna - Roberto, trust me. I am a woman. And I know women. That woman wants you. And I bet she's going to get you.

Roberto - If I got involved with her, it could cause trouble for my family. You know how Latin culture is. The social classes don't mix.

Anna- I think she plans to have you, one way or another. (They arrive at the movie house).

Roberto. I'll forget about her if you will. Let's enjoy the movie.

Anna - It a deal.

(Later that night Roberto was in his apartment. There was a knock on the door.)

Roberto - What did you forget this time, Anna? (opening the door)

Outside the door stood Alicia Calderon.

Alicia - Aren't you going to invite me in?

Roberto - Of course, Profesora.

Alicia - Isn't it about time we stopped playing? I intend to have you Mr. Sandoval. And I am a Calderon. I am entitled to what I want. When we met you knew the truth. This is not the first lifetime for us.

Roberto - So you believe in reincarnation.

Alicia - I believe in what we both felt when we met.

Roberto - What we both felt can ruin both our lives. I want a future for Arboleña...

Alicia - Arboleña is dying. It's living in the past, with old dead traditions like the gap between upper classes and the new middle classes.  In other countries, people can move up.  But in our country this gap seems to be uncrossable.

Roberto - That is our culture.  The gap is real. It does not good to pretend it is not there.

Alicia - Because of this Calderon and Sandoval gap. It might as well be the information gap between the rich and poor. It is widening every day. And unless we bridge both of those gaps, Arboleña is doomed.

Roberto - We will destroy both our futures if...

Alicia - I've done a lot of research on this Community Tourism idea since I saw you last.  It has tremendous potential for economic development.  And we can embed sustainable development in it.  It is something that can create a rich and powerful Arboleña.

Roberto - Luis brought that to our family. We are already succeeding with your Soccer Camp. He is working with the International Sports Adventure Institute which is pioneering this new field. It is the future of our family.  I am not going to do anything to jeopardize that great future.

Alicia -- We will create our own future. A future where Arboleña quadruples its GNP.  An Arboleña where there are no street children. An entrepreneurial culture where business is sustainable.

Roberto - You have great dreams.

Alicia - To be expected. I am a Calderon. I want to share those dreams with you. You are a Latino, a mestizo, the strong blood the people of Arboleña need to become alive again. And I know you are the man I want. And I will have you. It's up to you whether you make it easier or hard for yourself. I will have you. After all I am a Calderon. I am entitled to what I want. And I want you, Mr. Sandoval.
