WHAT KINDS OF FUEL BRIQUETTES CAN YOU PRODUCE?

There are several ways to produce fuel briquettes. each one requires differing amount of equipment and supplies. Chances are you can economically produce all of these in your country. It's a matter of deciding which one you want to start with so you can develop a profitable business. The three ways to produce FUEL BRIQUETTES include:

1) Charcoal briquettes

Charcoal briquette manufacturing requires that you produce two products. First you must produce the charcoal. The second step is then to prepare the charcoal and lastly you briquette it into charcoal briquettes.

2) Wax briquettes

Wax briquettes require you to mix your raw materials together with a binder, usually wax, that holds the briquette together more firmly after compression.

3) Nonwaxed briquettes

Nonwaxed briquettes involves using very uniform materials and mixing them together without a binder.

SETTING UP A SMALL SCALE FUEL BRIQUETTES PRODUCING PROJECT

There are some very important steps you must take to insure your fuel briquettes manufacturing production plan is a success. Some of these steps include:

bullet

selection of FUEL BRIQUETTES process to use

bullet

finding our what raw materials are available in the area

bullet

establishment of raw material sources that are reliable

bullet

setting up a business firm if not already in business

bullet

building a small factory/structure to house the plant

bullet

developing a work flow for the plant

bullet

CONSTRUCTION OF A FACTORY BUILDING OF BAMBOO/HUISCOYOL

If you already have access to a building or other structure, you do not need this section. However, if you are establishing a small business on low capital, you can build your structure out of bamboo, rattan or locally produce particle board or huiscoyol. You may frame the building using locally produced decay resistant round woods such as Leucaena, mangrove, ironwood, cedar and other termite resistant tree species. Such a structure might have only one very large open structure for housing both the machines and raw materials. The area can be divided into sectors:

sector 1 segregation of incoming raw materials

sector 2 storage of raw materials

sector 3 actual processing of briquettes

sector 4 packaging/ wrapping and storage of products

You will need to construct within the building an additional room for your office. Another sector would be for marketing your product. This should be in front where people can easily enter the building.

For more details on construction using bamboo/rattan/huiscoyol/ using round wood framework, write to Indigenous Construction Program, MOTILES, S.A., Barrio Lempira, Contiguo Papelitos, Frente ADEL, Intibuca, Intibuca, Honduras, CA  or email to briquetting@regenrecycle.com

 STORAGE FACILITY FOR RAW MATERIALS

LOCATING AND EVALUATING LOCAL RAW MATERIALS

The specific problems of obtaining raw materials include:

bullet

finding out what farms and processing plants or sawmills are in the area;

bullet

contacting them to find out if they have waste materials

bullet

finding out the cost of obtaining these materials

bullet

finding out when and where the materials will be available

bullet

finding out the quantity of material available

bullet

getting the authorization to remove the materials

bullet

locating the truck needed to haul the waste products

bullet

setting up storage units for the waste byproducts

bullet

constructing the building to house the waste products

bullet

making sure the materials are unloaded near the processing unit

bullet

developing a least distance-least cost route to use in collecting the materials

bullet

training drivers and loaders to follow the correct route

bullet

checking up to make sure all contracted for loads are collected

bullet

observing workers to see quality of their work

bullet

checking up on collection quality by riding around to visit sites at random after collection by workers

bullet

seeing to it the truck is maintained correctly so it can be used

bullet

being able to respond to sudden offerings of raw materials

bullet

evaluating raw material supplies for quality

bullet

adding the product to the inventory

bullet

setting up an inventory sheet for raw materials brought in and used

bullet

making sure there is a steady flow of raw materials for the production plant

COLLECTION OF RAW MATERIALS

A key component of the collection of raw material for FUEL BRIQUETTE manufacture is dryness. It is essential to collect the raw materials when they are dry and keep them dry. It is easier to keep them dry than to dry them after they become contaminated. Under no circumstances should materials be placed where they will be left uncovered. Cover them with plastic or woven mats if they are available. Weave mats of banana leaves and other materials for covering the ground where raw materials are to be collected. When purchasing from others inspect the materials and pay lower amounts for dirty raw materials. Word will get around and people will bring clean material in for you to buy.

QUALITY CONTROL OF RAW MATERIALS

One of the most important components of a successful manufacturer of FUEL BRIQUETTES is quality control. You need to control quality at these points:

bullet

selection of raw materials by inspection of all raw materials before the enter the production line

bullet

constant adherence to cleanliness of raw material once

bullet

they enter into the production line

bullet

maintenance of cleanliness in plant at all time

bullet

maintenance of cleanliness of all components of the factory

bullet

maintenance of cleanliness of supplies to be used for manufacture and storage of the FUEL BRIQUETTES

bullet

continual inspection of output products for cleanliness, freshness, color and quality

bullet

establish a program for listening to customer concerns and note problems they express about quality of your products

bullet

establish a feedback program to correct any quality problems that occur immediately

STORAGE FACILITY FOR RAW MATERIALS

This is a critical part of your operation. You will need to be able to store enough raw materials to maintain a consistent flow of products for your plant. In addition, you will need to separate all the different types of raw materials so there will be no mixing of the end products. On floor bins for storage of raw materials with or without enclosed fronts can be easily constructed in room 1 using bamboo, huiscoyol, rattan or rough lumber. It is important that raw materials be kept out of the weather so they will not rot.

FUEL BRIQUETTE ENERGY CONTENT

Differing waste materials have different energy contents. If you are working with commercial or export markets, they may want to know the energy contents of the briquettes. For those markets, you may want to know the energy content of the materials you are briquetting.

SIZE REDUCTION

For good briquetting, materials must be reduced to very small size. Size reduction is done by the chipper for waste wood and then the resultant chips are reduced further in a grinder or hammermill type crusher.

Chipper For Raw Wood

Hammer mill Crusher

Price FOB  $3400.00

MATERIALS MIXING

When using more than one type of waste material, it is vital that all materials be well mixed. Mixing needs to be complete even though the materials are all finely ground.

SCREENING

After the materials are ground and mixed, then they must be screened for size quality. This will remove those particles that are too large so they can be then returned to the grinder for regrinding before being added to the production line again.

4.     Sieves/Screener machine FOB US$1500

DRYING

The dryness of the raw material for briquetting must be held at a uniform level. Briquette raw material's dryness must be held around 12% moisture content. If the materials become too dry it will become too dusty and particles will not adhere to each other to form the briquettes. If the materials are to wet, they will fall apart as they dry after briquetting. If the raw material's moisture content is less than 12% you may spray it with water to get it to the desired dryness. If it is greater than 12%, you will need to use a dryer to bring it to the desired consistency.

CONVEYING

Product raw materials have to be conveyed from the grinder to the screen, from the screen to the dryer and then to the storage bin that feeds the compressor. Once the materials are in the storage unit that feeds the compressor, they must be conveyed to the compressor. Once the briquettes are formed they must be conveyed from the compressor.

Conveyor US$1100

Flat Conveyor US$$3500

BLOWING

In some systems, raw materials are blown up into the storage chamber for feeding to the chip compressor.

BRIQUETTING

A screw type compression machine is used for forming the briquettes. The briquettes are extruded with a hexagonal shape with an outside diameter of 60mm. The hole through the middle makes the briquette burn better. The length of the briquette can be controlled by the operator.

COOLING BRIQUETTES

After the FUEL BRIQUETTES  are removed by the mill, the FUEL BRIQUETTES must be cooled. You need to strap them and stack them in small piles and put them in a shady section of room 3 that has been set aside for this. It is important that this area be kept cool and clean.

STRAPPING

Briquettes are formed by compression which holds them together. However, they can deteriorate if allowed to be in a wet or damp place. Another source of breakage is careless piling of briquettes. Briquettes should be strapped with a strapping machine into small packets and then these packets should be strapped together into multiples of the small packets. Two pieces of strapping tape, preferably three should be used for safety and permanence.

STORAGE OF FINISHED BRIQUETTES

Briquettes should be stored inside, in a dry place. The floor should not be allowed to get damp and no leaks should be in the roof of the building. Briquettes should be kept clean and dry prior to selling. Always sell the oldest briquettes and arrange the storage area so that you are always drawing from the oldest products in your stock.

PACKAGING BRIQUETTES

While strapping in small bundles in consumer sizes is the most profitable way to market your FUEL Briquettes, often you will want to sell to larger commercial buyers. They may want to buy in truck loads and may want them strapped to a pallet. You will need a forklift and large strapper if you want to sell this way. Additionally you will want a large shrink wrapping system if products are to be exported. It is vital to prevent moisture from entering into the briquettes.

MANUFACTURING CHARCOAL BRIQUETTES

The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines charcoal as "a dark or black porous carbon prepared from vegetable or animal substances (as from wood by charring in a kiln from which air is excluded)."

Simply put: Burn wood in an environment where you can limit the amount of oxygen available to feed the fire, drive away the water and other volatile substances, and you're left with char, or what we commonly call charcoal. For the most part, charcoal is pure carbon.

According to Peter J. F. Harris, Department of Chemistry at the University of Reading in the U.K., the beginning of charcoal production coincides with the development of metallurgy some 5,000 years ago. A plain wood fire was not hot enough to smelt metals because of the water and volatiles that are released during combustion. However, burning charcoal produced temperatures well over 1,000°F with little smoke, just what was needed for metal work. Charcoal played an important role in the Bronze Age (about 3,000BC) and the Iron Age (about 1,200BC).

Of course, charcoal was used by man as an art material far earlier. Cave paintings using charcoal date back to as early as 30,000BC!

Man's first encounter with charcoal was probably in the aftermath of a fire caused by a natural event, like a wildfire from a lightning strike. A tree catches fire, falls down, gets partially buried and oxygen deprived, and the smoldering fire transforms the wood into charcoal.

Early methods of charcoal production involved burning wood slowly in pits in the ground covered with soil. Today, we use sophisticated above-ground kilns and retorts in which to manufacture charcoal with great precision and efficiency.

Leftovers from wood and paper processing (branches, bark, and sawdust) are screened and then chopped to a uniform size before being "roasted" in oxygen-controlled retorts—sort of like ovens—at 600-1,800°F. The resulting char is mixed with other ingredients before being molded into the familiar briquette shape, dried, and bagged.

Briquettes are a convenient, inexpensive source of fuel, The general consensus is that briquettes tend to burn longer and more consistently than lump charcoal, but not quite as hot. The consistency of briquettes is due to the fact that they are an engineered product, essentially made using a "recipe" that can be duplicated over and over again.

Briquettes frequently contain other ingredients in addition to charcoal to improve the performance characteristics of the product. As a result, they leave behind a considerable amount of ash, which is of concern in cookers that can't accommodate ash build-up.

The only required "other ingredient" in a briquette is a binder, usually a starch of some sort that holds the crushed charcoal together when it's compressed into those little pillow shapes. The problem is that this basic briquette may not light very easily, or burn very hot, or burn very long. So, manufacturers add more "other ingredients" to improve the performance characteristics of their products.

STORAGE OF LARGE QUANTITIES OF BRIQUETTES

Your product must be stored in a covered cool place so that they will not become damp while awaiting sales. It is very important to start with a storage area construction as soon as you begin planning to develop your FUEL BRIQUETTES manufacturing business. Bins can be constructed in the building in room 3 for this purpose. With a safe storage, you can produce large quantities of FUEL BRIQUETTES when raw materials are available, often during the harvest season and sell them later when prices rise after the season is over.

MARKETING

With a quality control program established, you should not have a great deal of trouble marketing your products. However, since you make no profit when the product is in your warehouse and is not in the hands of customers, a marketing plan should be developed at the beginning of the project. A marketing plan should include:

bullet

kinds of products to be produced

bullet

types of containers to be used

bullet

types of customers to be developed

bullet

product mix of products

bullet

profiles of present competitors

bullet

methods of introducing your product to potential clients

bullet

development and cultivation of large scale buyers

bullet

plan for selling to the government

bullet

proforma cost and return on investment projections

bullet

cost of marketing

RECORD KEEPING FOR YOUR BUSINESS

The quality of your record keeping for your business will be a major factor in the success of your business. It can determine whether you go out of business and lose all your investment or whether you develop a lucrative growing successful business. Records you should keep include:

bullet

sources of raw materials

bullet

costs of raw materials

bullet

money spent

bullet

money received

bullet

cost of machinery

bullet

cost of operating machinery

bullet

cost of labor

bullet

percent of product that break up are of

bullet

lower quality

bullet

selling cost per unit

bullet

profit per month

bullet

money taken from business by owner

TRAINING WORKERS

Training for your workers is very important. If you do not have trained workers, your business cannot possibly prosper at high highest potential level. Some of the skills you will need to train your workers to develop and implement include their ability to:

bullet

Select quality raw materials

bullet

keep premises clean

bullet

use the correct work patterns so they are most efficient

bullet

in their operation of machinery

bullet

keep track of materials used

bullet

follow your instructions exactly as you give them

bullet

do each of the processes needed to keep the plant work flow

bullet

talk to customers with courtesy

These skills are in addition to the technical requirements of their particular job. Training should be on a continuous basis for such a project.

CONTROLLING LOSSES

A key component of the profitability of your project will be based on the controlling of losses. Losses must be controlled in several important portions of your business:

bullet

making sure raw materials purchased are not

bullet

short weighted by farmers and other sellers

bullet

making sure rotting of raw materials does not occur or is minimized

bullet

making sure quality control systems are in place

bullet

making sure products are not stolen by workers

bullet

making sure processed briquettes are not spilled or dampened

bullet

making sure marketing of products is consistent

bullet

making sure workers and others do not steal cash or equipment from the firm

Without a complete loss prevention program established and implemented, the firm will not be profitable.

REINVESTING PROFITS

If you operate your FUEL BRIQUETTES manufacturing business by the guidelines in this booklet, you are sure to earn money. Profits will continue to increase and you must decide whether to:

bullet

continue to invest in expanding the present business

bullet

invest in an ancillary businesses to increase flow of profits

bullet

invest in a business in the USA such as an absentee business

bullet

invest in US or international monetary instruments

bullet

invest in offshore funds or other esoteric investment areas

For the small scale FUEL BRIQUETTES producer, investing in your own country solely could prove a problem if currency devaluation or political turmoil is a normal part of the economic climate. Some investment in a stable country's currency like the dollar in US banks is probably a good idea.

If you want to invest in your own country, look at areas close to what you are presently doing. For example, you might want to start a livestock feed business to use the better, high quality raw materials instead of putting them into FUEL BRIQUETTES manufacturing. In your country this can be a big profit business. On the other hand, you may have expertise in an entirely different area and want to invest your profits in it.

The key issue is that you will profit more if invest in some additional business or you'll never reach the high potential for wealth this small scale FUEL BRIQUETTES manufacturing business can offer you.

Leucaena Promotion and Outreach Center

Getting the Message Out Locally and on the Internet

We all believe in the fabulous future of Leucaena. the Leucaena Production Society (LPS) is leading the way in supplying seeds, know-how, seminars, workshops, online forums and other outreach,. But how can we get the message out and get other LPS growers involved? We are in need of a critical mass of growers and businesspersons developing Leucaena projects. LPS members need to know how to get the ball rolling in your area.

Leucaena Effect Agroforestry, a new development discipline based on using Leucaena and Agro/Forestry Residues gives you the steps has taken to bring Leucaena awareness to people all over the world.

The LPS has done a lot to bring Leucaena awareness to its local area as well as on the Internet. Now you can do the same thing in your local area and create more Leucaena awareness.

The LPS now gives readers of our website the step by step guidelines you need to promote and publicize Leucaena using these specific activities. Each of these steps have been taken in LPS's local area already.

I. Decision Making And Planning

1. Make the decision to promote Leucaena in your local area

It is vital that you realize that a great deal of your time will be required if you are going to create local awareness of Leucaena in your area. Be prepared to answer questions and be willing to visit with potential growers any time.

2. Purchase Your Own Copy of the Leucaena Production Handbook and perform some of the projects and activities contained within it.

3. Obtain a Leucaena Experiment Kit and begin your own Leucaena planting, no matter how small

2. Decide which groups) you will target for your outreach

There are several groups you may choose to target

Target # 1 Local farmers who may want to grow Leucaena for use as livestock feed or as a new cash crop. Leucaena is a fast growing nitrogen fixing tree with many uses. It originated in Central America and grows well in many places in the tropics. Because it fixes nitrogen gas from the air and make its usable to itself, plants and animals. It is extremely valuable to the environments. With its many varieties, Leucaena can produce nutritive forage (especially good for beef and dairy cattle), goats and water buffaloes.

LEUCAENA CAN HELP FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING!

However, Leucaena's greatest potential is for sequestering carbon, and serving as a carbon sink in dedicated plantations. It will also be of great benefit as a carbon sequestering intercropper for farms in the tropic. And after the World Trade bombing, oil supplies may be in short supply. Leucaena can serve as a biomass energy source. Please join with the Leucaena Production Society to promote Leucaena for this life saving approach that may save our very lives by halting global warming.

It has multiple uses and is suitable for firewood, timber, charcoal, fence posts, and rich organic fertilizer. Its diverse uses in the tropics includes use in tropical reforestation, revegetation of steep slopes and eroded hillsides, shade and nurse trees for tropical crops and as an ornamental plant. Leucaena grows in both the tall type and a short shrubby type. It is widely used worldwide for livestock feed - grazing, dried and in cut and carry systems.

Target # 2 Elementary, high school and college students who may want to grow Leucaena as a class or individual project for school, scouts or 4 H

Target # 3 Local craftsmen who may want to grow Leucaena as a source of seeds for beads

Target #4 Local Entrepreneurs who may want to get involved in developing a Leucaena project for profit

Target #5 Worldwide entrepreneurs, farmers, and others who would like to develop Leucaena based industries

Target # 6 Environmentalists already interested in carbon sequestration, the KYOTO Protocol and saving rain forest

Target # 7 Anyone with whom you would like to share information about Leucaena

Let's assume you want to target anyone who might have an interest in Leucaena. The following scenario assumes you are attempting to share information with anyone, and when special groups develop you will develop specialized information for each.

3. Decide whether to focus locally or to include the Internet

PLAN

Write down the following things on a one page plan.

1. How much time you plan to spend

2. How much money you want to spend

3. What your goals are in sharing information about Leucaena

4. What your areas of Leucaena expertise are

5. What you want to see as a visible indication of your outreach.

3. Establish a Leucaena Information Center

4. Put together and hang a Leucaena web page. Visit LPS's Leucaena WebPage . If you are viewing this document as a web page you may click to the document. If you are not viewing a WebPage you may go to:

5. Develop an Online Leucaena information center

6. Develop a Leucaena electronic mailing list

7. Submit articles to LEUCAENA ONLINE, LPS's Online newsletter to honducopa@yahoo.com

The LPS has already been involved in each of these activities and will share the materials LPS used. Also, if you would like to develop your own local or internet Leucaena outreach, LPS will be happy to assist with clip art, etc.

Conclusion: Leucaena's potential is great. Want to ensure that Leucaena becomes the tree species of choice for carbon sequestration and ameliorating greenhouse gases and stopping global warming?

Then it is up to those of us who are involved with Leucaena to promote and publicize it in the local area. If several hundred people who believe in Leucaena's potential develop similar outreaches, Leucaena will be well on its road to its great future by the year 2010.

Want to try growing Leucaena on a small plot and finding out if it will grow in your area or your country? EXPERIMENT! GROW A TEST PLOT! Experiment with Leucaena growing, utilization and seeds by getting the Leucaena Experiment Kit.
