What is the most important thing you can give your child that he or she can take with them everywhere they go?  Today our lives are such that we are constantly confronted with negative remarks about ourselves. People who are lonely and do not feel good about themselves are constantly trying to gain self esteem units at our expense.  It's even worse at school for your child. Bullies are everywhere. 

Teachers use sarcasm to control your child.  They may even make an example of him or her, making their self esteem fall even lower.  Is it any wonder that the self esteem of American youth falls while going through the process of going to school.  

That is why youth sports are so important. Youth sports can be an empowering, self esteem building experience for youth if the coaches know how to build self esteem.  But the fact is, self esteem begins at home.

How do you build your child's self esteem? How do you give your child something to remember about how you value him or her?  Would you believe that parents are the most important influence on children's self esteem and capability to achieve. Even children who are rejected by peer groups can go on to achieve if the parents keep up a self esteem building program. 

During the 1960s when students were being bussed in the South their fellow students would not talk to them. 

Only, the love and support of their parents enabled them to endure physical blows, horrible negative words and even being spit upon daily.  You as a parent have power to build or tear down your child.

What can you do so they believe you value them?  Chances are you carry their photo in your wallet. But they can't see it. No one else can. Your children may think you don't even want people to know they are your son or daughter. They feel like you are hiding their photos because you are not proud of them.  And if they are being put down at school, they really feel you don't want anyone to know they belong to you. It lowers their self esteem even more.

What if you showed them you love looking at them? When you go and sit for two hours while they practice soccer, are you not looking at them with love? The "Eyes Of The Parent Build The Child", as we say at ISAI.

When you go to soccer practice and sit there two hours, watching a bunch of kids run around, when you could be looking at professional athletes on TV or watching professional actors perform, they know they are important. Kid can pick up very easily when you value them, make them important, and give them the only resources that cannot be duplicated, your time.  That is of inestimable value.  You will never know how much it means to them.

The parents who drop their kids off are losing an incredible opportunity in this putdown world to empower their child.

Wouldn't your child feel good if you came to practice and games with a T-Shirt with his or her full color picture on them saying, "World's Greatest Soccer Player"?  Or if he or she knew that every time you drank coffee in your office, the mug had his or her color photos on it?

Or if your mouse pad had his or her picture and every time you used your computer, you would see that picture and smile and feel love? Did you know that love can be felt at a long distance?  When you see that picture of your child, and smile, your child might be having a bad day at school. Don't you think your child can feel that love across town?

When American children enter school, 95 percent have high self esteem.  When they graduate, 5 percent have high self esteem. Now self esteem is your perceived value. It's what you believe inside you are worth. Self esteem gives you permission to try.  The higher your self esteem, the more things you feel you are "permitted" to try to do. The more different kind of careers you are emboldened to try for,  The higher the level of achievement you think you can reach.
