My grandson Chris brought me into the world of soccer. I had vaguely known about it, seen it played when I traveled to Honduras and Colombia. I knew nothing about it except the player had great stamina and could run for 90 minutes without resting.
I also knew there were no time outs. I understood that to play soccer means to be in shape. In my childhood we played baseball football and basketball and also ran track and field. That was the sum of the sports from my childhood.
But soccer was not important. I knew soccer was played in Latin America but no one here knew about it.
I saw a lot of soccer played in Honduras and Colombia when I traveled there. Chris was exposed to soccer when he was 6 years old and I took him to Honduras on one of my missionary trips. He was embarrassed because little kids three years old could play soccer better than him. So he wanted to learn soccer. When we return to the States, a soccer league was begun for the first. He tried to play but really didn’t know what was going on.
Once we moved to Arizona, we found out about AYSO and Chris has been in AYSO ever since.
Chris brought the world of soccer to me and our cofounder, Dee Brightman. We founded the Soccer for Life, a non profit that collects used and new soccer gear for the children of Honduras. In Honduras we offer soccer camps, soccer clinics, international youth soccer tournaments, one for Hispanic and North American youth, and one for AfroHeritage youth from around the world. We are also developing two soccer academies in Honduras, one in La Esperanza and one in La Ceiba, Honduras.
The impetus for developing Soccer for Life, Inc., is to develop youth soccer in Honduras, especially in the states of Intibuca and Lempira. Because of the love for soccer at the grassroots in Honduras, we have great legacy to draw upon. And the other legacy we are drawing on is the soccer immersion culture of Latin America. We intend to combine these two soccer methodologies into a true Western Hemisphere soccer culture.
Latin Americas’ soccer culture is a true inspiration because of it deep integration into he whole culture. Everyone plays soccer. When I see the Latinos players they have great running ability, stamina and love of the game. Yet the do not have the North American’s discipline, love for drill and structure practice and volunteering in youth sports.
World soccer is also a great inspiration which we will draw upon in developing this program, The wonderful fan involvement of an Arsenal, the singing in the stands, the waving of banner, the Brazilians Sambas in the stands. In North America we see technical competence but they lack the energy flow from the audience to take them to a higher level of play.
The fact is, without a soccer immersion culture, the involvement not only of the players but of the fans, soccer will not reach its great destiny. Yet soccer can capture the heart of fans. In North America, if we play it right, soccer stadiums will rival, even past the Real Barcelona stadium with seating for 98,000 people. A movie was made about a Brit whose love for Arsenal almost lost his chance for personal happiness.
Our Soccer For Life sponsored Soccer Mastery program is designed to add the fire. the love, the power we need to create a new soccer - a WesHemisphere soccer combining Latin American Run and Gun with North American organization and skill development.
How so we the develop this WesHemisphere soccer that can develop soccer masters to the highest level so they can play at world cup levels?
How can we develop soccer Players in Latin America that only play with passion but have the technical skills, the discipline to hit any 1 foot square of the goal they choose, at will?
My sports heroes are Glenn Cunningham, Larry Bird, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Warren Moon. These are all players who practiced excessively, intensely, They drilled and drilled over and over gain. They are technically expert and perfect yet they combine this precision with the true passion and love of the game. These were the master of their sports.
Thus the purposes of Soccer for Life and the Soccer Parents Club:
1. To teach the concepts of peak performance at every practice, every touch on the balls, every games, every workout. That means recording performance each time - that has to be built in. In track and field, world class athletes focus on bettering their "personal best". That is how they measure their achievement. To do this requires the creation of a Personal Triumph File and the development of the inner athlete.
2. To create Soccer masters - those who have total engagement of body, mind and spirit perfection. Thus we will have a person at each skill level of development give his best. He or she has achieved mastery of the skill so he performs them effortlessly. smoothly and fluidity with complete confidence. This achievement of Soccer Mastery will be facilitated by continuous practice until the mastery of skill at a specific level is achieved. The budding Soccer master will be evaluated through testing when is skill is mastered first in the practice session environment.
Soccer Mastery will consist not only player development of soccer skills but must include self esteem propagation, community building, cross cultural relationships skills and leadership skills. To be a Soccer Master it not just to be good at playing soccer. Its to Ambassador for the creation of the Western Hemisphere Soccer Culture.
The integration of the Western Hemisphere through Soccer. that requires the learning of the WesHemisphere languages English and Spanish. Cross cultural awareness will be key components as well as other communication skill.
Thus Soccer Mastery is a program design to help young people as well a adults to learn the skills of the beautiful game and to be able travel anywhere in the Hemisphere and make friend through soccer.
