The 21st Century Requires Sustainable Development Practices

The 21st Century is here. Are you prepared to create or expand your Leucaena Effect Agroforestry focused business into the highly competitive global marketplace you are facing? Are you ready to add sustainable development to your marketing toolkit? Have you begun to develop sustainable practices for your Leucaena Effect Agroforestry activities, your packaging,  projects and marketing?  Are you using the Internet as the marketing tool for your new sustainable LEEAF business?

Environmental Certification Will Be Required For 21st Century Businesses

The 21st century will be the century of sustainability and environmental entrepreneurship. Already many buyers in Europe and the USA and Japan are requiring environmental certification for products. Boycotts against tropical timber products are in place in many European countries. Only environmentally certified wood and lumber products can be imported. Other product areas requiring environmental certification is sure to follow.

European and Japanese firms are already paying campesino groups to plant trees in Mexico and Guatemala to sequester carbon for their carbon emissions.   Developing a Leucaena Effect Agroforestry project requires addressing both environmental methods and environmental certification can prevent the loss of market share and especially the loss of your prime tourism markets.

All Entrepreneurs Must Develop Their Tourism Businesses As Environmental Businesses

Frankly the 21st century is going to require you develop your tourism business as an environmental business. And without full access and utilization of the Internet, you will not be able to compete in the developed markets of the USA, Europe and Developed Asia.  Without those LEEAF markets, you might as well not even be in the tourism business.

Businesses Will Be Required To Fight Global Warming

ISAI is facilitating Leucaena Effect Agroforestry as environmental entrepreneurship in your country as well as offering a sustainability certification program. Your group can be proactive and actively involve itself in the most pressing environmental issue of our time - Climate change from greenhouse gases which is leading to global warming.   We can help you develop system to lower your carbon emissions. By incorporating Leucaena planting for Carbon Emission sequestering in your project, you will have this most important environmental component for sustainability in place. The truth is, the present voluntary controls are going to be modified to mandatory controls on carbon emission.

ECOSAT Design is the development of sustainable, profitable, long term,  Tourism projects.  It involves the use of ecologically sound methods of facilitating Sports activities and projects, incorporating the use of Leucaena trees. It's a LEEAF system that uses sustainable, appropriate inputs and methods, and takes into the balance the fact that Tourism adds carbon emissions.

Tourism projects add carbon emissions and greenhouse gases as a result of air travel to your site.  It create carbon emissions from the running of vehicles.  It create wastes from the food eaten by your customers.  It packs down soil from human and animal impact on the land.  It uses fuelwood in cooking food outside.  When trees are felled for fuelwood, it opens the land to soil erosion, flood and desertification.   Your customers consume food and the way that food is grown impacts the environment.

The importance of assessing a possible property for LEEAF before you begin building is vital.  Ask yourself some questions.  How much land needs to be cleared?  How easily does the soil pack?  Will their be runoff and thus soil erosion from rainfall.  How much will your project affect the local wildlife and native plants?  There are many other questions you must answer before you purchase a property and begin your project.

Email Dr. Cross to find out you can select the right property for the project.  Then ask her how to develop your Leucaena Effect Agroforestry project  in a sustainable way through ECOSAT Design.

How does ECOSAT Design deal with these Possible Environmental Impacts?

Result of LEEAF Activities

How ECOSAT Design Ameliorates

Carbon emissions from air travel Carbon sequestration through planting Leucaena
Food Wastes Composting
Soil impaction Use cover crop, rotation of areas used
Fuelwood use Replant multiple trees for each tree felled
Pesticide residues from food production Organic production of our own food for the project as a profit center
Runoff from cleared land for building structures Vetiver and Leucaena tree planting - design of high traffic areas
Use of plastic bags and packaging for gifts, foods and other items used by customers Biodegradable Packaging
Use of pesticides to control insects and other undesirable organisms  Use of biological pest control or mechanical devises to catch insects
Increasing carbon emissions, possibilities of oil spills, by transport of fossil fuels Solar And Other Alternative Energy Sources, biomass energy
Giving customers only one experience means they must increase travel to gain different experiences increasing carbon emissions Combining Sports Adventure Tourism with ecotourism and language travel so fewer air trips are necessary
An increase in local temperature and loss of tree wicks on site through concreting over soil and felling trees Mandatory Leucaena Carbon Plantation Inclusion
Use of chemicalized livestock feed for meat products prepared for use by customers Low Tech Livestock Feed Production From Leucaena - Natural Veterinary Medicines
Increased carbon emissions, loss of foreign exchange from country from imported foods Working with local and indigenous people to produce food organically - training and support of local organic food production through seminars and training programs
Use of highly chemicalized treated wood and building products that gives off toxic emissions such as UFFIs' Use of non toxic building material
Lack of carryover of ECOSAT ideas after customer leaves project Community Through The Internet
Lowering of water table from growing number of customers Water Conserving Technologies
Offer customers highly chemicalized products in gift shop and ancillary areas such as spa and beautify salon Offering a line of Natural Cosmetics, skin care products and personal care products
Carbon emissions from vehicles on site Work toward making Emission Efficient Vehicles & Non-motorized Vehicles
Use of toxic cleansing products  leads to water pollution and danger to customers health Non Toxic Household Chemicals
Food production through high use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers and high energy inputs increases carbon debt Producing food locally so no long term transport is needed.  Use of composting And natural fertilizer
Bringing in project leaders from developed countries and only using nationals for menial low paying jobs Development of a Internet based on-site LEEAF Business Skills Transfer  focused on developing countries
Control of and profiting from LEEAF projects in developing countries from developed countries Providing financing and joint venture opportunities for Developing Country Entrepreneurs
Imported, canned and process fish food products used Development of local aquaculture projects to produce natural, organic fish for use in restaurants  for customers
Throwing away  of cans,  plastic containers and papers Recycling through local non profits or others who could reuse the materials.
Attempting to force sustainable development without a profit center to support it Embedding sustainability within the profit centered Tourism project
Tourism projects that bring in rich tourists who exploit the local people and treat them with contempt,  create much resentment and increasing possibility of vandalism and theft.  This can lead to high taxes, or government expropriation of your enterprise if you are not careful Developing your LEEAF project with a community outreach. Hire local people at a good salary and involving the local community in your activities. Provide a day for the community raise fund from your project by dedicating that day to community project
You do not accept your responsibility as a community leader to understand local needs. Your trees are planted without an understanding of local needs for firewood so people come into yours and steal them.  They may come and clear cut your plantation during the night Make sure your trees are protected by fences and even guards if necessary. A proactive way would be to plant a certain percentage and dedicate it to local people.  Allow them to come in and cut in a sustainable manner.  A species like Leucaena can be cut and will re-grow like ratooning sugar cane
Not using presently available LEEAF resources to begin LEEAF development within a country Drawing upon two already available tourism draws -  Soccer and Fishing as the lead LEEAF programs in a developing country
Poor choice of land and water resources, development of environmentally unsuitable, destruction of animal and plant habitat.  Using sites that are vulnerable, not making sure site can withstands pressure of Tourism Projects Dr. Carol Cross, Cofounder of ISAI is the founder of the SATReal Consultancy & Financing Center (SATReal Center) and offers environmental impact study as part of each LEEAF based real estate property sold. Optional  ECOSAT Design consultancy analysis available for each property sold.
