YOU CAN PROFIT FROM ECOTOURISM DEVELOPMENT FACILITATION

Businesspersons in all walks of life are learning that when they develop an expertise in the hospitality area, learn the skills of cross cultural interaction, gain a knowledge of ecological and environmental principles, apply these principles to good business and economic development factors They can develop an environmental business.  They are also seeing that when they learn the basics of green business, believe in themselves and their ability to build a profitable and lucrative business while protecting and saving the environment, they can be productive and successful.  The key is that they need to follow step by step guidelines of ecotourism development and management, get the necessary ecotourism information transfer system in place, apply the skills of self esteem building based customer bonding and linking, and work diligently, they can be successful environmental entrepreneurs.

"Tourism is the number one export industry after the year 2000. The present form of environmentally exploitive tourism has caused massive environmental and ecological problems in many countries. In order for tourism to continue to be the lucrative source of income in developing countries especially, it must change its form to that of ecological or environmental oriented tourism, called in this paper, ecotourism.

Developing a world tourist industry based on ecotourism in which entrepreneurs in the industry in all the countries of the world can succeed is key to the creation of sustainable ever expanding tourism revolution.

Ecotourism offers open ended opportunities for new entrepreneurs from every country and cultures of the world and can provide the hope required to create a world in which all people can hope to achieve a livable quality of life. And making this kind of growth possible within the ecological and environmental constraints of a country makes the challenge even greater.

"There is a increasing need for the development of ecotourism projects that interface profit and protection, environment and economics", noted Dr Carol Cross, Director of the International Sports Adventure Institute, Inc., a international business development facilitation firm that is developing ecotourism projects to enable developing countries and economies to foster economic development.

"Our special program, the " Ecotourism Development Facilitation System", was originally designed to help Caribbean Basin firms develop profitable ecotourism projects at the same time they assist in increasing foreign exchange.

Since its inception, it has been opened to ecotourism development of a variety of projects throughout Latin America and Africa. Tourism will be an important part of development in any country, including Europe, the USA, Canada and Asian countries. All the world economies will benefit from developing viable ecotourism projects", noted Dr. Cross.

"Within a decade money generated from the global exchange of people will soon exceed the earnings from the trade in oil -- currently the worlds number one export", noted World Tourism Organization projections in an article in World Development. The article also noted this breakdown in the amount of money earned by tourism in different regions of world in 1987 was very interesting.

Dr. Carol Cross is director of the ISAI, a corporation that is developing a variety of international ecotourism based development facilitation systems for organizations and individuals who wish to participate in the anticipated 40 percent increase in tourism expected in the 21st century.

"The fact is the one factor that could bring the expected tourism revolution to a screeching halt is the fact of environmental degradation and destruction in the areas in which tourism is taking place", she noted. Dr. Cross has a PhD in plant ecology from the University of Oregon and has studied the effects of deforestation in Honduras and other parts of the world. I saw areas that once were thriving mahogany forests turned into arid deserts too dry to grow corn. The Indians in that part of Honduras live on sorghum since it will grow in a more arid climate. A sorghum based tortilla, which is their staple diet, has to be the most tasteless and unappetizing thing that I have ever tasted.

Yet the transformation of a formerly dense, lush, tropical rain forest to the present semiarid desert ecosystem happened within a few years. This could happen in any country that is overused by tourists and in which tourist projects are developed from the planning stage without the required ecological and environmental constraints and safety guards in place.

I have also observed the island of Roatan in Honduras where tourist flock to dive on the reefs there. There is often raw sewage including human feces coming from the sea houses that simply flush their toilets into the ocean. The natives swim in this water along with the fecal material and garbage. Garbage and trash is found in the streets, yet the islands is becoming more and more populated with many tourists deciding to settle down and purchase homes.

Tourism here is of two kinds. The native people from the mainland come and live in the hotels in Roatan which have no sewage facilities. The Americans come and live in the hotels and places on the other side of the islands where they have the amenities. Yet as more and more tourists come, the fragile ecosystem becomes more and more at risk.

Tourism is an idea whose time has come. One of the factors propelling tourism is the evolving consciousness of all the people of the world toward a world polyeconomy. A vital component of becoming a world citizen is the first stage - seeing other people and how they live where they live. Tourism is a vital key component of the developing world polyeconomy that is encircling the world.

"With the breakup of the Soviet Union, a New world of international cooperation and interlinking seems to be coming into place.

But no matter how we perceive a New World Order, there is one underlying constraint that controls all life on earth. That is the ecological facts of life, the environmental parameters that we simply cannot change. There are ecological laws about how species can interact with each other, or how toxic substances affect interconnected fragile ecosystems that are just as ironclad as the law of gravity or the law of molecular interaction. Violate these laws and the system crashes.

This is not theoretical. We have seen the result of violating ecological laws all over our planet. Cut down the trees of a tropical rainforest and get a desert. It always happens that way. Its as simple as that. And since the ecosystems we live in are the end result of eons of geological time that went into creating an equilibrium of species and environmental constraints, once the system crashes, we do not have 60 million years to recreate these viable communities. They are lost forever. Once species go extinct, they are forever extinct.

Our children will never enjoy the species richness we take for granted and destroy without thinking or caring.

Tourism cannot take place successfully without environmental and ecological species richness. Tourists are people who will not travel far and pay thousands of dollars to go to see toxic waste dumps, stumps of dead trees, rotting garbage in the street, degraded and dangerous environmental situations.

People will not pay thousands of dollars to go boating in polluted streams clogged with trash nor will they attempt to fish in dirty water that smells like rotting algae.

They are paying for natural beauty. They want to see clean beaches with clear water, lush trees and vegetation, butterflies and blossoms, water with sparkling fish.

Tourism can generate immense income for you is you develop projects that maintain this kind of environmental ambience.

Indeed there is a new form of tourism based sustainable methods called sustainable tourism. Ecotourism is one aspect of sustainable tourism. It's based on experiencing the wholeness that comes from interacting with the natural environment, with as few barriers of high technology between you and the organisms and ambience of the Earth itself. This new form of tourism has been called " Alternative Tourism". We prefer to expand this concept to the level of ECOTOURISM. We define ecotourism at many levels of participation from the creation pf ecotourism projects to the promotion of ecotourism projects to the experience of ecotourism.

Ecotourism is not the passive experience ordinary tourism is. By involving yourself in ecotourism you are having a higher level experience. Ordinary tourism focuses on getting. You go to an "exotic" site and get for yourself. You use the local environment and/or the local people and you give nothing back. You see yourself as superior to them, it is charming to observe their "primitive, backward conditions". You say to yourself, stealing self esteem points from them, Glad I don't have to live like that." and you show the slides and homes and say, "Look at the way they live."

Ecotourism involves giving as well. As an ecotourist you seek the underlying meaning of things. You seek to understand what is going on within the human and natural communities. You experience at a deeper level. You realize that without them, the cultural richness of our green planet would be diminished. And you would be the poorer.

You see them as valuable members of the human community who provide for all of us a richness of experience. You see that their customs and values are meaningful within their own context, and may even turn out in evolutionary time to be more valid than ours. You begin to see that each environment presents its own constraints to human populations and understand the culture they create is a valid even beautiful one.  you value their lack of environmentally destructiveness  of the people within that environment to develop the best quality of life they can for themselves.

You see that animals and plants are an integral part of the richness that create the world you live in. You are aware that the plants you see give you food, oxygen, medicines, fibers, building materials. You begin then to see the whole picture and see that all environments have value and all species contribute to the whole to create a working, self renewing, reequilibrating world system.

Ecotourism creates a new perspective on our life here on the earth. And you are so much the richer for this experience.

You give respect to the people you meet in the environment. After all their culture is superior to ours. They have learned to live in harmony with their environment without despoiling it. We have not. We need to learn from them.

You understand your oneness with all the life forms you experience. You talk to the trees and tell them they have given you joy by expressing their beauty. You become one with the experience and with the people and with the land and the plants and animals. You have high level spiritual experience. You come home rich within.

And you come home with more. You come home with a superordinate goal. You come home with a desire to assist in preserving this richness for your own future and for the future LifeKind. All the Ecotourism projects developed by the ISAI will have an optional environmental volunteering component so that you can work with the owners of the ecotourism project to ensure that there will be permanent availability of this natural beauty to others and to the organisms who live in the habitat.

The fact is, no matter what we do, now matter how high the technology, we cannot exceed the limiting environmental boundaries and parameters of this planet. We cannot survive if we insist upon spoiling our own dens without destroying ourselves.

Ecotourism is an idea whose time has come. As the global environment comes under more and more pressure, ecotourism will be the only system that will maintain an income flow for tourist operations. The International Sports Adventure Institute  intends to be there with innovative learning systems for ecotourism developers so they develop their projects from stage one with the ecological and environmental constraints of their environment from the very beginning of the concept stage to the vital planning stage to construction to actual operation.

The International Sports Adventure Institute  is developing special training programs for ecotourism staff so those working in the ecotourism project whether they be waiters, bus boys, receptionist, or tour guide, understand the value of the ecosystems in which they are working.

In addition, the International Sports Adventure Institute  will use the unique Customer Bonding and Linking System developed by the Founder and Director, Dr. Carol Cross. CBL will be used to develop long term relationships between staff, customers, management, the people in the project area and the living things in the environment.

Ecotourism projects work best with repeat customers. Without repeat customers, the ecotourism project operator will be training people in basic ecological principles year after year. Once you have a cadre of regular returnees you will be able to offer more advanced projects such as actual nature study classes and projects, You will be able to involve your repeat customers in trail building, stream cleanup, recycling, biomass energy projects, and other aspects for enhancing the quality of their experience while on vacation. You will be able to consult with them and brainstorm idea son developing new project types, better ways of project development and maintenance.

You will profit more and so will they if they keep coming back year  after year.

ISAI is developing programs for every aspect of ecotourism from international business facilitation, cross cultural and cultural diversity interaction facilitation as well as turnkey systems for marketing ecotourism project to the world polyeconomy", continued Dr. Cross.

Ecotourism as a solution to present environmental degradation of exploitive tourism is as key issues in all the countries of the world. It is of great concern to these countries who have become dependent  on tourisms for their entire economic livelihood. they must do something to maintain their environmental ambiance.

This is an issue being debated in the USA.  Arizona, for example is developing ecotourism programs. As of today, several new environmental bills are pending in the US Congress, which are designed to protect our environment.

Other countries are finding it necessary to regulate environment inputs as well. It is going to happen and it is best to develop projects with these ideas in mind so that high cost infrastructure will not be needed.

"Extensive research by ISAI staff has led to the discovery of many extremely lucrative opportunities that can be very profitable for entrepreneur willing to enter the ecotourism area with small, medium or large scale project. There are many opportunities for develop mutually advantageous partnerships with entrepreneurs in other countries.

The concept of Trading partner bonding and linking is a vital part of developing a successful ecotourism business. Creating long term trading partners is the basis of the international ecotourism development systems offered by ISAI, "noted Dr. Cross in the latest edition of International Ecotourism. (IET). International Ecotourism (IET) is a newsletter dedicated to  facilitating ecotourism development worldwide.

ISAI has created IET as a ecologically based business development tool for members of its Ecotourism Facilitation Association, a trade association of ecotourism project develops, architects, landscape architects, ecologists, environmental consultants, teachers, students, agro ecologists, agroforesters, organic farmers and all the players needed to develop viable ecotourism projects worldwide.

Developing ecotourism projects requires knowledge of ecological principles, use of good design systems, use of ecologically sound construction systems, use of ecologically correct building materials, development of systems for using recycled paper and other re-useable supplies that protect the environment and development of waste disposal and water supply system based on biomass energy development, solar energy and other soft systems.

Its a total system that involves customer bonding and linking, and reverence for the marvelous earth system we have.

IET offers "How To" information on ecotourism development as well as cross cultural interactions and inter-country technology transfer, information transfer, and ecological sharing of knowhow and expertise. As an member of ISAI you get key leads to tourist markets, as well as evaluation of tourism projects, services and methods of skills development that get you the wealth you want in ecotourism.

In addition, we are launching the ecotourism environmental volunteers program which will work with cooperatives and community groups to create working system to enable them to develop and maintain ecotour projects by barters some of the uses of their site for the use of long term environmental volunteers.

Finally  we will be developing financing systems for ecotourism project worldwide, including the development of limited partnership to finance large scale ecotourism project with forest reserves and scientific research component.

With all the ecological components, the bottom line of Ecotourism is that there is money to be made in it, big money. Millions of dollars. And with a well designed and maintained ecotourism project, you can keep on making money because the environment of your project will be more attractive not less as time goes by.

For example, in the latest issue of IET, you find that there are some key facts that LEAD TO BIG PROFITS FOR YOU.
