Games
Do you want to get students excited, involved, and motivated? Just say,
“Let’s Play.” They will leap into action. They will come, eager, open and
ready to follow your instructions.
Games reinforce learning because you involve two of the most important
learning components, repetition and fun. You learn to actively involve
students through the use of color coded P/S cards in a game format. They
recognize the thinking that takes place and realize that they are learning
while they are having fun. They often do not realize that practicing with
these cards is a form of drill. They are learning, they are enjoying, and
they are having a positive experience. That sets a positive feedback loop
for the learning of pronouns and verbs in different tenses. You have options
for practicing how to make negative forms, yes/no question formations, and
WH-questions for different tenses. Other games you learn that empower
students include P/S bingo and matching sentence strips with pictures.
A sample lesson with the cards follows.

are, is
A. Student 1 (S1)
places the pronoun cards to the left. Then on the right put the tense marker
card, the verb card and a noun or adjective card. Start with one or two.
Then add more. S1 points to a pronoun card. S2 says the sentence. Then
change roles.
B. Work in pairs. S1 =
Student 1. S2 = Student 2
.
C. NOTE: 1P = first
