Guided Pattern WritingThe easiest thing to teach in any language is how to read. Just about anyone can learn to read from a book. That is because all you do when you read is tap into the output of another person. They did the work of writing. When you go and hear a speaker, such as on the radio or in politics, all you have to do is listen. They did the work of writing the speech, rehearsing and delivering it. But when it comes to having your students do the output, oops, that’s where fear comes in. Writing is one of the most terrifying fears many of your students have. Many people actually freeze when confronted with a blank piece of paper. Their brain becomes congealed, and they can't think of their own name, let alone a creative thought. So this final skill requires that you teach your students to write in a protective way. That means you do not present them with a blank page and say write. You establish a framework where you help them move from fear to empowerment. You use a technique called guided patterns. In guided patterns you present them with templates that require more and more of their input as they progress through a writing ladder. At the first stage they may only have to fill in one blank in each sentence. When they are able to do this without fear, you move to the next rung of the ladder where they may have to fill two blanks. As the students progress, you may expect them to fill in phrases and write words for sentence completion. Then they write complete sentences as part of a sentence completion. Ultimately they have the skills and are confident enough to write an entire paragraph. In these guided-pattern activities students use previously introduced vocabulary. Students fill in blanks with their ideas, using dictionaries when needed. As a teacher, you know the importance of having them move gradually to free writing. Through this technique, they gain skills and thus have perfect practice. Perfect practice results in perfect learning. You’ll learn how to prepare writing practices that lead to correct free writing. All of these skills are offered to teachers to enhance their ability to help their students. They are easy to learn and in the workshop each person will have a chance to practice using them with the group. is Today ______________ Monday. ate We _______________ at noon.
