Id like to invite you to
come to a place you may never have heard of.
Its called
Intibuca. Intibuca is in Honduras. Its a Departmento many
people have never heard of. It is a place where blackberries grow
wild, peaches and apples are grown and strawberries are a new
export crop. In winter, during June, July and August, you need
warm clothes. Big sellers in the marketplace are warm woolen
blankets imported from Guatemala.
You will love Intibuca. But there is more than just pleasure in this state filled with mountain pine forests. This is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. The mountain cloud forests of the tropics are more threatened than the rain forests of the tropics.
You are invited to come to
Intibuca to know the forests, to
learn Spanish and to interact with the
Lenca Indians. The money of Honduras is called the lempira. The
lempira is named for Lempira, a Lenca Indian leader treacherously
killed by the Spanish at peace talks they called.
Each year local school children mostly Indian (this is an Indian state for all practical purposes), dress up in Indian garb, carry bows and arrows in school and paint themselves in honor of Lempira.
Sound intriguing. take a look at some images of Intibuca, in the capital city, La Esperanza (the hope).
Then come to Intibuca to the HonduTree 2004. Interact with local Lenca Indians. Find out about why the Lenca Indians are petitioning the government of Honduras for help in preserving the forests. And find out why they need to replant their lands.

La Esperanza is located in the Western mountain pine forest of Honduras. It has a population of around 20,000 and looks like a Spanish Colonial town. Buildings are of adobe with Spanish tile roofs. It is a very pleasant temperate mountain forest climate. Locally produced fruits include strawberries, blackberries, apples, plums and blueberries flourish there.
Most of the time spent in the seminar will be in La Esperanza Honduras. We will be staying at either the Hotel Esperanza or with local landowners where we will be planting trees. The hotel is a hotel with accommodation used by traveling Honduras. Breakfast, will be provided. We will take lunches and dinner will be available a the hotel.
Much of the activity time will be spent on the farms or properties of landowners. We will also be planting trees in different Lenca villages.
The experience will not only include experiences with nature, but interactions with Lenca Indians, visits to the Lenca marketplaces and Special Lenca towns such as the capital of pottery Siguatepeque. We also plan to visit the forestry school in Siguatepeque to see the tree planting center of Honduras.
We will also visit plantings of Vetiver, visit local landowners. There will be opportunities for personal time, walks in the forest. There are places on many of these farms that have never even been visited by locals. let alone Americans.
