Honduras Youth Soccer Project

WHO WE ARE:

Soccer For Life is a 501 (C) 3, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world’s most popular sport available to all the children of the Western Hemisphere. We need old soccer balls, shin guards, old soccer shirts and shorts, repair them, hold fund-raisers and develop training and coaching for Honduran poor children.

WHAT WE DO:

In Honduras -

Soccer for Life supports the Liga Menor de Futbol Intibucana in working with the youth of the department of Intibuca. The Department of Intibuca is the state in Honduras where the Lenca Indians live and work.

We also offer mountain concursos where young people compete for donated soccer balls, soccer cleats, shin guards, uniforms, soccer socks,  and shorts.

How We Share Your Cup Of Hope With The Children Of Honduras

A. Organize a day for a concurso where we will bring additional soccer shirts, balls, shinguards for a competition of all the kids: This will enable children who are not on the team that the uniforms are donated for to participate. It also permits girls to enter and win balls and other items.  Through the concursos we teach healthy competition, working together, coordination.  Here are the components of a Donation Concurso:

Here is a little information on same part sof the concursos:

bullet

Individual Sack Race - The Race Of Personal Coordination

The individual sack race tests the person's coordination and personal control of their body.  The winners usually do not start off running as fast as they can.  If they

have experience they know how to do it right. Just the right speed, steps short enough to fit inside the sack and timing. Those who fall try to go too fast, take too long steps and do not know where their body parts are. They cannot coordinate running at a certain speed, with steps of a certain distance.  The ones who win often are not the fastest, but the most careful or better thinkers.

bullet

Two Person Sack Race - The Race of Cooperation and Teamwork

The Two person sack race requires two people to be in absolute harmony and cooperate totally.  They must work together and not try to outrun or outshine their partner.

bullet

Potato Race - The Race Of Hand, Eye and Body Coordination

In this race the person must control his body movements at the same time they move forward. It requires constant thinking and the making of minute calculations over and over again.

bullet

The Speed Race - The Race Of Athleticism

This is a race that tests the athletic ability of a young person.  Those who are in condition usually win these races.  Most of the kids already know who is likely to win this race.  It requires speed, stamina and dedication to win this race.

B. Prepare a small plot of land for  use in planting trees and/or other plants that I want your group to grow—this is the environmental part of Soccer For Life’s Mission

C. Care for the plot and the plants

D. Collect ornamental plants from the forest and or your yards (ask your mom’s permission first). These will be planted around the plot to beautify it.

These youth need to know they must do something in exchange for what they get in life. Because they are now actively involved as well, when both parties participate it is a complete transaction. That makes it a win win proposition that builds self esteem because these youth know they have something to give.

Volunteers Are Needed To Run Concursos In Mountain

 Villages Of Honduras

How We Work In Honduras - Dr. Carol Cross serves as the volunteer Director of Development of the Liga Menor. She is collecting soccer balls, uniforms, shin guards, soccer cleats, and supplies such as balls and net to be shipped to Honduras for the use of the league.

Children Making Soccer Balls From Plastic Bags

The Liga Menor is a volunteer youth soccer organization in a state where the average income in $35 per month.

The Liga Menor de Futbol Intiibucano is the FENAFUTH officially designed organization for youth sports in the Departmento of Intibuca. That means that all play sanctioned by FENAFUTH in Intibuca is controlled by The Liga Menor. Thus all play between teams, as well as between communities and especially with other FENAFUTH approved Liga is controlled by the Liga Menor. The Liga Menor is made up of the coaches who have teams in the Liga. The Coaches meet each Tuesday night to discuss problems in games, officiating, financial issues, team and player conduct, as well as scheduling each week games in whatever fields are available. At these meetings, you will see coaches who are Latino, Eramani Indians, Lenca Indians, Mayan Indians and Americans (usually with the Peace Corps).

After her attendance at the campeonata, Dr. Cross was invited to the meeting of the Liga Menor on Tuesday night. On Tuesday night the president of the Liga Menor picked her up at her home. The meeting was held in his clinic. Each of the coaches present introduced themselves to her. The following members of the Liga Menor and coaches were present.

After the usual business, Dr. Cross was invited to discuss her program for working with youth through soccer. They suggested that since they were already organized under FENAFUTH, working with them would be the easiest way for her to achieve her goals of helping the youth of Intibuca to develop soccer skills. Doctor Cross gave them 20 yards of yellow jersey fabrics for making practice shirts. In addition, she showed them one of the sample soccer uniforms she had brought and gave them five books on coaching youth soccer. They were in English, but they said they would get them translated. They stated that there had been no training for coaches, they knew nothing about how to teach youth. I told them about my plans for soccer clinics. They asked, "What is a soccer clinic?". They admitted they had never been trained in any way.

They agreed that they would work together and she would help them get some of the resources they needed. They then invited her to meet with the Comite which is the guiding council of the Liga Menor.

After several meetings with the League, Dr. Cross was invited to meet with the Comite of the Liga Menor. She discussed ways that the Liga Menor can be used to help offer soccer programs to 2000 boys in Intibuca as well as developing programs for girls. Some of the ways Dr. Cross suggested she would help including the donation of uniforms, balls, soccer shoes, goals. nets, as well as technical assistance such as volunteer coaches, video tapes, Spanish language youth soccer coaching books.

Other resources will include internship programs as well as volunteer work groups such as church work groups. She then gave a questionnaire to the Comite to complete on the needs of the organization.

The Liga Menor was formed for players under 18 years in these categories:

bulletPluma 8 year to 10
bulletPre Mosquito 10 years to 12 years old
bulletMosquito from 12 years old and 14 years old
bulletInfantil from 14 years old to 16 years old
bulletJuvenil 16 year to 18 years old

At this time, due to lack of resources, training, coaches and soccer fields, the Liga Menor only has three groups - premosquito, mosquito and infantil.  And there is NO program for girls.

Not only does Dr. Cross take these soccer items to share with the Liga Menor, she is also seeking coaching materials and books in Spanish.
