Honduras Youth Soccer Project Update 2007Photos of 2004 Torneo Internacional Intibucana in La Esperanza With First African Team Playing In HondurasPlans For Honduras Youth Soccer Project 2007In the mountains of Intibuca, soccer is the Cup of Hope. We at Soccer For Life have big plans for building a youth soccer program that makes a difference in the lives of these mountain children. In these Lenca Highlands, there is very little employment for those who do not own land. Most work as 50 lempira a day work. 50 Lempiras is $2.65. I mean 2 dollars and 65 cents. And the cost of living is not that much lower here. With these low cost job, these campesinos and poor famlies somehow manage to send their children to school. This year many graduates are coming out from the Colegios. But there are no jobs. For one job with 2 positions, over 200 colegio graduates applied. What is going to be the results? And this is only one school in one small city in the mountains. Thousands all over the country are graduating, after their families have sacrificed to make them professionals. But there are no jobs. Most of these youngsters who are members of the Liga Menor have come to me seeking employment. Soccer For Life Is Developing A Honduran Foundation, The Foundation for Youth In CommunitiesBecause of the crying need for employment among my soccer players of the Liga Menor, Soccer for Life is working to create a Foundation to the called . We want to create a nearsource IT center here for these youth to provide employment. This foundation will be supported and financed as a part of Soccer for Life. Those who will be employed will be soccer players from the Liga Menor, groups who have been a part of our concursos and communities in which we are developing soccer programs. One of the requirements to be employed in the IT Center is that they will be trained and be expected to become youth soccer coaches. They will learn to give as well as receive. They will learn, they will earn and they will give back to the world soccer community. They will not be removed from their communities they will become an active participant in community development through the soccer programs they will develop. And the donations of soccer gear from YOU will determine the success of this program To Create This Youth Entrepreneurship Program As Part Of This New Foundation, Soccer For Life is Soliciting Donations of Computers, Printers, And Software. This youth entrepreneurship program will use soccer players because we know they have been used to hard work and have experience following instruction. Players do not stop games here because it is raining. These are the kinds of youth that can be successful in an IT center. They will be expected as well to be volunteer coaches to the community projects to work with the children to help them gain the skills. It is not enough just to teach the skills, the coaches must serve as role models and caring adults for these children who have no one to care about what they do or how well they do it. As a result our camps and clinics will be open to girls and boys. That means we will need uniforms and clothes for girls and boys alike. Women soccer is the fastest growing segment of the game. The Honduran women national team has been dissolved due to the shortfall in financial resources resulting from the hurricane. If a new generation of female soccer athletes are to be developed in Honduras, it will be from programs like the Honduras Youth Soccer Program. Girls want to play but there is no organized program for either girls or boys in small communities like La Esperanza. Dr. Carol Cross will be personally involved in the Foundation just as she is in Soccer for Life and the Liga Menor. She will attend the camps, work with the coaches and volunteers. She will provide training in self esteem building, soccer mastery methods and character building skills. She will introduce them to the "One Step At A Time" Soccer Mastery system she is developing. She will involve the local members of the community with which she has long standing relationships.
