Atletico Lenca is a soccer team with a mission. The ultimate goal of course, is to win soccer games and someday win the national championship. That Atletico Lenca is more than a soccer team. Because many of the players come from poor background, Atletico is dedicated to economic development in Honduras.
Atletico players are participants in a community gardening project in Intibuca. They are involved with the Liga Menor youth soccer program in Intibuca, and are dedicating themselves to making a difference in Honduras.
Atletico is presently being promoted by Dr. Carol Cross, director of Development and International Representative, who is moving to Honduras to work with the team. In addition to marketing the team, she will be assisting them with community outreach.
The team members are already
working with
the local
homeless children center. They visit the children, spend
time with them and help to brighten their day. But the
commitment ofAthletico is expanding. The team wants to
reach out more. As a result,Athletico will be participating
in the development of youth soccer programs in Honduras through
the Honduras
Youth Soccer Program.
In addition, they will be supporting the planting of trees in Honduras through working with poor womens groups. Athletico is also sponsoring Leucaena Farmer Forums they will be supporting throughout the areas in which they play soccer.
Atletico Lenca will be involved in other community projects in the future, including working with Garifuna communities to develop ecotourism projects to developing educational programs at homeless children shelters.
We are supporting the development of the Intibuca Youth Soccer Center.
