An Alternative Crop for Tropical And Temperate
Agriculture - Introduction To The Plant That Can Stop The Cutting Of Old
Growth Forests
Isn't It Time To
Make Fiber Cement Board From A Natural Fiber? Kenaf Is The Fiber That
Can Enable Your Fiber Cement Board To Reach A Hugh Environmentally Oriented
Market.
Become a Tropical Food Entrepreneur and cash in on markets in the USA,
Canada and even China. Food may be in short supply and you can
profit from your own tropical food project.
Leucaena the multiple tree has many
profitable uses from reforestation to biomass energy to livestock feed
to fuelwood and others. You can develop a successful Leucaena project
with the step by step guidelines you get in the Leucaena Production
Handbook, written by Dr. Carol Cross
We are facing climate change and
possibilities that could see the end of civilization as we know it. You
can do a great deal to stop global warming from planting trees to
changing your use of transportation..
Farmers in Honduras, just like farmers everywhere,
are entrepreneurial. They are risk takers, interested in the future. But farmers
don't plant for the future, for them, the future is now. They want a crop that
can be profitable now. Kenaf can be the profit center farmers are looking for,
this year. Recent research has shown that kenaf has the capacity to become a
major crop for livestock feed in the tropics.
Growing kenaf for livestock feed is a short-term
profit center based on the facts that 1) kenaf at 60-70 days is very high in
protein and has an amino acid content very similar to alfalfa which is excellent
for feed. Tropical countries are a prime market for livestock feed, and kenaf
can be an important input to the livestock feed industry.
Research recently done by Dr. William A. Phillips, at
the Grazing Lands Research Laboratories, USDA/ARS at El Reno, Oklahoma,
uncovered an amazing fact. "Kenaf must be cut for high quality, high protein,
very palatable, tender and succulent livestock feed before it is 80 days old.
Protein content deteriorates after that.
Researchers at Oklahoma State University, including
Dr. Michael R. Dicks, have studied the use of kenaf as a catch crop planted
after wheat. In 45 to 60 days, 2-3,000 pounds of forage can be produced after
wheat is harvested, if soil moisture is adequate. The amount of rainfall in the
study was 31 inches per year. With Arkansas’s greater rainfall, higher
production can be expected.
According to Dr. Dicks, et al, if no second crop is
produced after wheat, the land is underutilized. Dr. Dicks noted four factors
that enable a second crop to be produced.
1) Adequate soil moisture must be maintained for the
following season’s wheat crop.
2) The timing between spring wheat harvest and fall
wheat planting must be sufficient to enable a second crop to reach physiological
maturity.
3) Latent or return growth of the second crop is
easily controlled, and
4) The second crop must be economically feasible
given the current farm resources.
Growing kenaf is relatively easy. It is related to
cotton. Farmers can use their present equipment. Planting densities for kenaf
vary from 6-10 pounds of seed per acre. "Farmers in the local area wishing to
try out kenaf for livestock feed can obtain seeds for test planting at a cost of
about $25-$30 per pound from the Leucaena Production Society (LPS)," reports Dr.
Carol Cross, Director. The LPS offers a wide variety of support services for
farmers seeking to develop kenaf projects including a free booklet "You Can
Profit from Kenaf" and the newsletter, Kenaf Growers Notebook.
Kenaf can be grazed, green chopped, cut and carry, as
well as ensilage, baled, cubed, pelletized and combined in compounded feeds. It
can be harvested with a forage harvestor. It will grow again and can be cut in
another 60-70 days. According to Dr. Phillips, kenaf may be grown in a few years
in other states like Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, and even in Minnesota as a
short season livestock feed crop.
In the long term, kenaf has many potential uses for
rural AgroIndustrial development. Kenaf can add value to AgroResidues such as
wheat straw, rice straw, rice hulls, etc. The paper mills, according to one
speaker at a recent Farmer Forum are looking very hard at kenaf as a source of
pulp to replace dwindling stands of Southern pine and hardwoods. It was reported
that it would take 650,000 acres of kenaf to feed one pulp mill for one year.
Kenaf for paper pulp is the wave of the future. Other potential industrial uses
for kenaf include a pellitizing mill, building materials, cloth for clothing and
bags, paper pulp, litter, oil absorbent, fertilizer.
Long term industrial developments for kenaf are being
explored by researchers. Farmers can benefit from this research and make plans
on how to enter other profit centers based on kenaf. The LPS draws heavily on
research from universities in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Oklahoma
and Georgia. Additional research findings from the rest of the USA, India,
Austrialia and Europe are also being evaluated, distilled and worked up into a
program that our farmers can use.

WHY ARE Kenaf LEAFEEDS SO GOOD FOR
CATTLE, GOATS AND WATER BUFFALOS?
Properly formulated Kenaf LEAFEEDS have the following
characteristics that make them the superior livestock feed:
HIGH PROTEIN CONTENT - Kenaf LEAVES
HAVE PROTEIN CONTENT OF 25% TO 30%
HIGH PALATABILITY - MOST OF THE
LEAFEED IS YOUNG LEAVES - - CATTLE AND OTHER LIVESTOCK PREFER YOUNG LEAVES TO
OLD' LEAVES AND STEMS
HIGH DIGESTIBILITY - Kenaf LEAFEED
IS VERY DIGESTIBLE SINCE IT IS CONSTANTLY BEING CUT IN 40 TO 80 DAY CUTTING
CYCLES - - ALL YOUNG LEAVES AND VERY SMALL STEMS
HIGH NUTRITIVE VALUE - THE PRO TEIN
IN Kenaf LEAFEEDS IS OF HIGH NUTRITIVE VALUE SINCE ITS AMINO ACIDS ARE WELL
BALANCED AS IN ALFALFA - - IT IS ALSO A RICH SOURCE OF CAROTENE AND
