Leucaena Is Perfect For Providing Livestock Feed In Your Country

Dear Cattle Farmer,

As a tropical cattle farmer, I know you have plenty of problems. You may have problems with external parasites like ticks. You may have problems with internal parasites. You may have problems with your animals cycling or with reproduction. You may have problems with your farm workers. You may have problems with farm handling equipment and supplies. You may have problems getting foreign exchange for needed farm equipment. But I think we can both agree that the most urgent problem you have is feed -- feed for your animals during the dry season.

That is why we are pleased to announce the formation of the Modular Livestock Feed Production Program by the Leucaena Production Society. An integral part of the Leucaena Production Society is it's comprehensive consulting service. This is a special program of the Tropical Farm Consulting Service of the LPS.

We are developing the  Modular Livestock Feed Production Farming program for two reasons. First of all, we plan to develop this program as an integral part of a total program of livestock farming services for cattle farmers in the Tropics.

Secondly, we believe that livestock farming, and especially the cattle farming sector in your country, is going to expand in the next ten years, both in quantity and quality. Cattle numbers will increase at the same time you upgrade the quality of your cattle. We believe that cattle numbers must and will increase in your country over the next decade.

With this increase in cattle numbers will come the need to develop livestock feeding systems that do not destroy the environment. We do not want Sahel conditions developing in the cattle ranges of Latin America. Therefore we are working to develop livestock feeding programs, based on Leucaena based Total Use Agroforestry which includes using AgroResidues as the central basis of range management and livestock feeding. We are working with tropical farmers and scientists to meet your needs at the same time we assist you to maintain your soil base forever.

And that is why this program has been designed. The Leucaena Production Society (LPS) intends to offer you many kinds of agricultural technology related services, with the newest state-of-the art techniques, and more services as will be required by you.

This Leucaena based farming program was conceived as the best methods for beginning a new service delivery to you the tropical farmer. Eventually our complete cattle farming service complex will include:

We expect the above comprehensive services delivery to be in place within the next five years. Presently our service delivery is based on assisting you with your most crucial and timely problem - livestock feed in the dry season.

Accordingly,  the Farming program was conceived as the best methods for delivering these technologies you.  It  focuses on the key factor of your operation at present -- feeding your cattle during the dry season.

Some of the key components of the program include:

The  LPS’s Farming program, serves as your complete livestock farm consultant, with information on new agricultural technologies and technical assistance modules for you. We work side by side with you to develop a complete scientific, up-to-date farming system.

The LPS Farming program can assist you in developing livestock feed during the critical dry season. Let us work together for mutual profit.

We want to assist you to keep your livestock well fed.

Yours Sincerely,

Carol Cross, Ph.D.

WHAT IS LEUCAENA?

Leucaena is a fast growing nitrogen fixing tree (FGNFT) with many uses. originated in Central America.  It grows in many places in the tropics. Because it fixes unusable nitrogen from the air and makes it useful to itself, other plants. and animals, it is extremely valuable to the environment. With its many varieties, Leucaena can produce nutritive forage (especially good for dairy and beef cattle, goats, and water buffalos).

It has multiple uses and is suitable for firewood, timber, charcoal, fence posts and rich organic fertilizer. It diverse uses in the tropics include use in tropical reforestation, revegetation of eroded hillsides and slopes. windbreaks, shade and nurse trees for tropical crops, and as an ornamental. It most useful future use will likely be usage in carbon sequestration against global warming. Leucaena grows in both the tall tree type and small bushy weedy type.

WILL LEUCAENA FIT YOUR FARM?

Leucaena is a perennial in the tropics . It grows in both the tropics and the subtropics. Leucaena grows best no higher than 500 meters above sea level. It grows at higher elevations , but slower and with less production. Leucaena prospers best with rainfall of 600-1700 mm. It can grow in many kinds of soils from rocky to heavy clay. Yet Leucaena prefers alkaline and neutral soils and grows poorly in acid soils.

LEUCAENA FOR CATTLE FEED?

Cattle feeding on Leucaena forage in Australia have shown some of the highest weight gains ever recorded in the tropics. Leucaena foliage is highly nutritious, palatable, digestible, and productive. It isbest to feed Leucaena in combination with grass to prevent buildup of mimosine, an unusual amino acid found in Leucaena.

How VALUABLE IS LEUCAENA?

Cattle and goats love Leucaena. They relish the leaflets and young stems. Leucaena grows back within 2 to 3 weeks and can be ready for grazing again. It is best to graze on a one month rotation.

Leucaena can be grazed repeatedly. Some fields in Australia have been grazed constantly for 20 years without needing to be replanted.

The leaves are similar to alfalfa in digestibility. Protein content varies to up to 24%. Under favorable conditions, one hectare of Leucaena can produce 10 to 20, even 24 tons of edible matter, compared to 8 to 9 for alfalfa.

Leucaena should be fed with grass because large quantities of Leucaena alone is too rich in Mimosine. Fed with a complimentary grass, Leucaena can be very productive. Cattle feeding near Brisbane, Australia, gained about 1 kg per day during the slow growing dry season. When the rainy season returned, cattle gained more than 1 kg per day.

CAN LEUCAENA BE EASILY USED To FEED LIVESTOCK IN FORMULATED FIELDS?

Leucaena can be an important ingredient of formulated livestock feeds.  As a matter of fact, in the tropics, it is vital that a source of nitrogen and protein be included in livestock feeds in order to produce a balanced ration. We can use Leucaena to take the place of alfalfa in tropical formulated feeds for cattle, sheep, goats, camels, water buffalos, even poultry.

The important factor in using Leucaena to replace alfalfa in tropical feed rations is proper formulation. The Modular Livestock Feed production Systems is key to the development of livestock feed industries in the tropics.
