The pine forest is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The tall trees, the wind whistling, the pine cones dropping, the needles singing.
Yes it is beautiful. But a pine forest is often found on the poorest soil because pine trees can grow almost anywhere they get a chance. As a result those who live in these pine forests are surrounded by beauty. But the poor thin mountain soils do not produce much. A small crop of potatoes, enough corn for tortillas and some beans which they must sell for needed items like salt, clothing, etc.
And since the mountain pine forests are over 6000 feet in altitude, it gets cold. Indeed we are looking at winds of 30 -40 miles per hour coming down with constant brisa(A foggy rain that never stops), During this time of year many many children come down with pneumonia.
In these mountains there is no recreation. The houses of adobe(mud bricks cut directly out of the poor soils which cannot grow even the smallest crop) lose pieces of dirt and then the cold winds blow through the houses. Since many children sleep on the dirt floor(the lucky ones have cardboard cartons) they get very very cold. Indeed the cold mountain air feels like knives of ice when all you are wearing is a worn t-shirt and torn pants.
Yet they love the game of soccer. If they are lucky enough to have a ball they play with it until it is completely destroyed. If there are no balls they play with soda bottles, rocks or anything they can kick.

This is the part of Honduras where Soccer for Life is building its soccer program. Here is where your donation come. Here is the place where the donation concursos are held. Here is where we are building the LIGA DE LAS COMUNIDADES INTIBUCANAS.
We invite you, your club, your league, your association to participate in helping us build soccer teams in an area this difficult. Will you help us give these poor children what they need to play the beautiful game you know and love?
Here are some ways you can help:
You are invited to "Adopt ATeam". What does it mean? That means you become part of a cross-country Soccer Community. It means your team will come to Intibuca and play in the annual Youth Leadership Tournament in Intibuca. It means your team will share its old soccer gear, nets, balls with your team in the Liga de Las Comunidades Intibucanas. That means you create long term friendships with the players on your team. It means you learn enough Spanish to communicate with your team. It means you write letters to your team members. (The Liga de Las Comunidades Intibucanas will translate the letter for you). It means you exchange photographs with your adopted team.
It means you hold a cleat drive in your community at least once a year to collected used soccer gear for your team. It means you get a t shirt with the name and logo of your team to take home. It means you stay in the home of your team members when you come to Honduras. It means you bring at least one gift for a member of your team when you come. It means you email your team members. It means you learn something about the culture of the Lenca Indians of Intibuca. It means you learn how to interact with someone of another culture.
It means you hold a fund raiser, a car wash to raise money for your team to provide water for your team during its games. It means raising money for snacks during the game. It means raising money to buy them a goal net, practice pinnies and cones.
Ask all the parents and adults you know to clean out their old athletic shoes, basketball shoes and running shoes and bring them to you. Ask them to donate ten dollars for shipping to Honduras. You as coordinator collect the athletic shoes. The cost of shipping 500+ pairs of shoes to Honduras is around $250. All you need is a contribution of 25 people to pay for the shipping. Go to the page Project Athletic Shoes For Youth Empowerment for details on the project. You can send out emails to all your friends and ask them to help. CLICK HERE for a sample email letter you can send out.
All You Have To Do IS Collect 500 Pairs of Athletic Shoes/Soccer Cleats and Pay The Shipping Cost To Honduras. With This Gift, Your Group Build A Youth Empowerment Small Tourism Project In Their Village. CLICK HERE And Take A Look At How Your 500 pairs Of Shoes Will Change A Young Person's Life. We are creating a line of athletic shoes and soccer cleats that can be purchased for a small amount of money. These are for the youth (teenagers) who demonstrate some talent and could have a future as soccer players. Good soccer cleats or athletic shoes will be available for purchased here for 300-500 lempiras (15 to 20 dollars)
Many community want to hold concursos. These concursos draw the people together. Here's one concurso where hundreds of children and adults came together. The children to compete, the adults to watch. The concurso is like a field day in the USA. The soccer gear you donate, the funds you send for shipping enable these communities to come together for a day of clean fun and soccer. Here the mayor of San Miguelito welcomes Soccer for Life to a large concurso held in this mountain community. Not only did we enjoy the races, we also helped out with a little coaching for goalies, which is sorely lacking here. As a result, we are offered many opportunities to teach character.
This is a unique volunteer opportunity to be a part of the pioneering Recycled Athletic Shoes Financing program. You will live in Intibuca and participate with Peace Corps volunteers, international volunteers, Intibuca Youth Soccer Volunteers in planning and supporting youth in their small scale tourism projects. These projects will be funded by the Recycled Athletic Shoe Financing program.
Want to really make a big difference? Help us by setting up a athletic shoe drive in your city. We have flyers and other support documents we can email you.
The cost of shipping by boat to Honduras is one of our major obstacles in serving these children. We need funds to ship boxes of goods we already have. Whatever you are willing to donate is welcome.

A Fund Raising Field Day is a fun, excitement day where your young athletes can have fun, get exercise, raise funds and build their personal self esteem. A Fund Raising field day is similar to a Donation Concurso we run with our soccer donations in Honduras. The difference, is that there are entry fees for athletes to enter the Field Day. These entry fees are used for defraying the cost of the Field Day and raise funds for shipping to Honduras. In addition to the entry fees, each athlete is required to clean out his or her closet or garage and bring the soccer items found there. In addition, each athlete will attempt to get sponsors for his entry fee as well as for sending to Honduras. We will put together a password protected page for your use once you decide to offer a field day. In addition we will place your event on our Soccer For Life Fundraising Calendar with a link to your club web site.
There are members in your club or group that have soccer and sports gear in their closets, garages and basements. They don't know about our work in Honduras and how it is helping the poor children of Intibuca get what they need to play. You are the key to sharing the Soccer For Life Mission with them. Help us collect soccer gear and promote the Honduras Youth Soccer Project. You can stop the waste of used soccer gear in your community. You can stimulate companies and groups to donate. Help us Share The Soccer Gear Donation Project
Because it rains so much in Intibuca, it is green like Oregon. Unlike Oregon there is no money to level soccer fields, no bulldozers, no tractors. As a result when the community dedicates land to a soccer field, they find that when the rainy season comes it is a mud field. We are seeking to obtain artificial grass for this field in Pinares so the children and adults can play yearround and play as many games as they want. There is no electricity in Pinares and therefore no TV no other activities except soccer. Won't you help us give these kids a safe place to play. Muddy fields lead to injuries. There is no doctor in Pinares and during the rainy season often no one can leave the community. Nor will any doctor travel to Pinares. Won't You Buy A Square Meter Of Artificial Grass For This Soccer Field?
The outside of the soccer field in Pinares is full of mud. Each time a player comes off the field or the ball comes off the field more mud is deposited there. We are offering you a chance to make a lifelong commitment to being a part of the Honduras Youth Soccer Project by sponsoring a paver to surround the field so that mud is not taken onto the field and embedded in the artificial grass. You can make a difference in this mountain village by sponsoring a paver.
We value every contribution you make to Soccer For Life. Our donors are the key to making a contribution to the children of Intibuca. We thank you in advance for sharing with us and through us to the children of Intibuca. However you choose to share, your gift will change the life of a child.
