Maricopa Country Is The Star Of Arizona

Come and Visit Maricopa County, Arizona

Maricopa County, Arizona was named after the Maricopa Indian Tribe.  This large, heavily populated county was extracted from part of Pima and Yavapi counties in 1871.  It was the fifth county formed in Arizona.  Maricopa County was extremely large and it was necessary to divide it,  eventually creating Gila and Pinal counties.

Arizona was wild.  Lawlessness was rampant.  Outlaws, miners cowboys, gunslingers were everywhere.  The territorial capital at that time was Prescott.    But Prescott was a long ways away by horseback.  It was difficult to govern from Prescott In the late 19th century.

As a result the people in the South needed  government closer to home.  They petitioned the Territorial Legislature to give them their own government,.  In those days, counties were the most important governing focus. Even today counties have tremendous powers in land use designations.

Two groups wanted their own countries.  The people living in the Salt River Valley as well as those near the Gila River. The legislature finally decided to give those from the Salt River Valley group their desired Maricopa County.  As populations moved south, the seat of power shifted from Prescott. Finally,  In 1889. Phoenix became the final site of the territorial capital.  Phoenix had all the right environmental ambiance and is now Arizona's capital city.

Maricopa County is the most populous area of the State.  Here you'll find more than half of the state's population.  Maricopa County continues to grow with as all of these outlying cities of Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Peoria, and Gilbert keep building more housing.   The central Phoenix nexus with its out-fanning local cities  are the major centers of political and economic activity.  In the capital are going to find an ever increasing influx of a growing high-tech industry, manufacturing and agriculture industries.
