Leucaena can Be
Used For Economic Development In Tropical CountriesLeucaena is a plant species, It is environmentally friendly and extremely valuable to the environment. With its' many varieties, Leucaena can produce nutritive forage (especially good for dairy and beef cattle, goats, and water BUFFALOS.
It has multiple uses and is suitable for particle board, roofing felt, hardboard, textiles, nonwoven fibers, paper making, rope, twine fiberglass substitute, building materials, oil absorbent, soil erosion mats, fuel briquettes and rich organic fertilizer. Its' diverse uses in the tropics include use in tropical revegetation of eroded hill slopes, windbreaks , shade and nurse plants for tropical crops, and as an ornamental. There are a wide variety of Leucaena cultivars available.
WILL LEUCAENA FIT YOUR FARM?
Leucaena is a perennial in the tropics. It grows in both the tropics and the subtropics. Leucaena grows best no higher than 500 meters above sea level . It grows at higher elevations, but slower and with less production. Leucaena prospers best with rainfall of 600-1700 mm. It can grow in many kinds of soils from rocky to heavy clay. It prefers alkali in and neutral soils and grows poorly in acid soils.
LEUCAENA FOR CATTLE FEED?
USDA research has shown that Leucaena is a high quality protein rich feed. As a matter of fact, when cut at 60 days before fiber levels increases, Leucaena is an almost perfect livestock feed. Cattle find find Leucaena foliage is highly nutritious, palatable, digestible, and productive. It is best to feed Leucaena in combination with grass to prevent too high a nitrogen content.
HOW VALUABLE IS LEUCAENA ?
Cattle and sheep love Leucaena . They relish the leaflets and young stems. Leucaena can be grazed and grows back within 2 to 3 weeks and can be ready for grazing again. it is best to graze on a one month rotation.
Leucaena can be grazed repeatedly.
The leaves are similar to alfalfa in digestibility. Protein content varies to up to 30%. Under favorable conditions, one hectare of Leucaena can produce 10 to 20, even 60 tons of edible matter, compared to 8 to 9 for alfalfa.
Leucaena should be fed with grass because large quantities of Leucaena alone is too rich in soluble nitrogen. Fed with a complimentary grass, Leucaena can be very productive.
As a raw material for production of livestock feed, fertilizer, furniture, paper, charcoal, briquettes
To add value such as combining it with agricultural and forests residues to create livestock feed, fertilizers
As an energy trapper for grazing and feeding livestock
For ecological regeneration for adding nitrogen to the soil and compost
As a carbon sink for sequestering carbon
For sun access control through using it for shade for coffee and tree crops
For temperature control by providing doorway shade and city shade
For environmental beautification as an ornamental plant
To lower production costs by using Leucaena in place of expensive fertilizers
To prevent water pollution by using it as green manure instead of chemical fertilizer that can run off and produce algal blooms
As a protein generator through photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation
As a soil stabilizer and erosion controller
As an in place green manure for crops such as corn
