Building
Income Generation For Soccer Youth
It takes a village to build a child.
How many times have you heard that? When you look at the programs on
tv asking you to send money every month don't you wonder if what you are
doing is building a child?
Soccer For Life offers you the opportunity through Project Athletic Shoe to
build a child through participation as a member of a virtual village
community. This virtual village will be reflected in an onsite small
scale tourism project being developed for youth entrepreneurship. This model
was developed after much brainstorming in Honduras. This is based on a
concept called EcoAgroForestry, first developed by Dr. Carol Cross in 1995
as a method of sustainable development. A key resources of Soccer for Life
in Honduras is Donaldo Caceres, one of the partners in the development of
the Compañia
de Reforestación, Energía y Agricultura (CREA) S.A., who is also the coach
of the second division professtional team, Athletico Esperanzano.
Coach
Caceres noted that 200 students graduated from the colegio and there
are only two available jobs. The greatest ambition of these youth is
to "go mojado" or become an illegal immigrant to the USA. We came up with
the idea of "Recycled
Athletic Shoe Financing". With this method of financing, we can keep
these youth in their communities and they can serve as the focal point to
develop sustainable farm based entrepreneurship projects in Intibuca.
We will offer community membership cards to all donors to show you are a
part of this innovative virtual village community

project and post it to our website. Each Virtual village consortium will
have its own website. You will also receive a free copy of MSN Messenger and
a free Hotmail email address and a Yahoo group. As a member of the Project Athletic Shoe

The mountain cloud forests of
Intibucá are
exquisite. Fog creates droplet of ethereal beauty as the pure white
clouds come down to meet the earth. Ferns grow in profusion as we see
places where no
foot has ever trod. Hills and mountains abound, reminding one of
Oregon. Sustainable tourism could be one of the answers to income generation
in these mountains communities, many of which have no electricity. The
problem is the cost of developing even small businesses is out of reach. Even a
simple thing like a clean toilet and a flower garden that could attract
tourists is out of the questions. If you drive in these mountains
there are no rest areas or places to stop and get clean water or use the
bathroom. Other projects could involve small scale food processing and other
projects such as growing kenaf for handicraft projects.
What The Project Entails
Soccer for Life is partnering with
CREA, a Honduras consulting firm to develop Sustainable Village
Projects. Each Small Scale project will be developed by a YOUTH
PARTICIPANT on HIS FAMILY LAND as a joint venture with CREA and Soccer for Life. Every project will serve the
community by putting in an improved soccer
field (either a new one or fix up the present one). Each will have a combination
or one or more of these modules:
 |
A composting toilet which will be
built, decorated and cleaned by the YOUTH PARTICIPANT |
 |
sanitary garbage disposal - A covered
garbage can |
 |
Clean water supply - maintain 10

Empowering Youth Through Project Athletic Shoe
This will be a family project, led by one
of the soccer youth we work with here. The young person will be called a
YOUTH PARTICIPANT. What will a family need to create this project?
A four way VILLAGE. A square is
the most stable form there is.
Here are the four Village Members:
Village Member One
YOU as collector, donor and fundraiser
and athletic shoes (size 6 and larger) join with other soccer people.
You will be joining with other donors to collect these shoes. We will be
grateful for one pair or whatever number you are able to collect. When
you email us, let us know you want to be part of a Linked In Group for
Project Athletic Shoes For Building. We will send you an invitation to
join a Special Linked In Group of others who will work with you to make
these collection. Through LinkedIn you can communicate with others who
are participating with you. share ideas, problems and solutions and methods
of collection.
 |
Your part is to participate with others
in your community and Linked In community online to collect 500 pairs of
soccer cleats and/or athletic shoes.
|
 |
You will need to wash and pack
the
shoes you are able to collect
|
 |
You will need to raise the funds to ship
these shoes to Honduras. They will first be shipped to our shipping company
in Florida and from there we will take them to Honduras by
boat. 500 pair of shoes will weigh about 500 lb and take up 10 24 x 24
boxes. A company in Florida will ship them for $50 per box because we
are a nonprofit. More Information on this when you want to ship your
athletic shoes or cleats.
|
There is a complete guideline for
collecting athletic shoes and other soccer gear through a
fund raising Field Day, includes all
the steps you need.
Village Member Two
Soccer for Life will serve as the
collector for the athletic shoes and provide tax deduction receipts to
donors. Soccer for Life will collect seeds and obtain donated tools
for the project as well as funds for shipping to Honduras
Village Member Three
CREA will clean the athletic shoes,
hire workers to repair and market the shoes. CREA will also
administer the project, oversee construction of project and have part
ownership of the project to ensure its is organic, sustainable and
environmentally sound. CREA will have the responsibility to train
the YOUTH PARTICIPANT in sustainable methods and continue monitoring the
project. In addition, CREA will put up a website marketing the
small entrepreneurship project. CREA will also train the participants
through workshops, seminars and courses.
Village Member Four
The YOUTH PARTICIPANT will offer
sweat equity in building structures, planting crops, maintaining cleanliness
of the project, serving the customer etc
