We all believe in the fabulous future of Leucaena. the Leucaena Production Society (LPS) is leading the way in supplying seeds, knowhow, seminars, workshops, online forums and other outreach,. But how can we get the message out and get other LPS growers involved? We are in need of a critical mass of growers and businesspersons developing Leucaena projects. LPS members need to know how to get the ball rolling in your area.
Leucaena Effect Agroforestry, a new development discipline based on using Leucaena and Agro/Forestry Residues gives you the steps has taken to bring Leucaena awareness to people all over the world.
The LPS has done a lot to bring Leucaena awareness to its local area as well as on the Internet. Now you can do the same thing in your local area and create more Leucaena awareness.
The LPS now gives readers of our website the step by step guidelines you need to promote and publicize Leucaena using these specific activities. Each of the these steps have been taken in LPS's local area already.
1. Make the decision to promote Leucaena in your local area
It is vital that you realize that a great deal of your time will be required if you are going to create local awareness of Leucaena in your area. be prepared to answer questions and be willing to visit with potential growers any time.
2. Purchase Your Own Copy of the Leucaena Production Handbook and perform some of the projects and activities contained within it.
3. Obtain a Leucaena Experiment Kit and begin your own Leucaena planting, no matter how small
There are several groups you may choose to target
Target # 1 Local farmers who may want to grow Leucaena for use as livestock feed or as a new cash crop. Leucaena is a fast growing nitrogen fixing tree with many uses. It originated in Central America and grows well in many places in the tropics. Because it fixes nitrogen gas from the air and make its usable to itself, plants and animals. It is extremely valuable to the environments. With its many varieties, Leucaena can produce nutritive forage (especially good for beef and dairy cattle), goats and water buffaloes.
However, Leucaena's greatest potential is for sequestering carbon, and serving as a carbon sink in dedicated plantations. It will also be of great benefit as a carbon sequestering intercropper for farms in the tropic. And after the World Trade bombing, oil supplies may be in short supply. Leucaena can serve as a biomass energy source. Please join with the Leucaena Production Society to promote Leucaena for this life saving approach that may save our very lives by halting global warming.
It has multiple uses and is suitable for firewood, timber, charcoal, fence posts, and rich organic fertilizer. Its diverse uses in the tropics includes use in tropical reforestation, revegetation of steep slopes and eroded hillsides, shade and nurse trees for tropical crops and as an ornamental plant. Leucaena grows in both the tall type and a short shrubby type. It is widely used worldwide for livestock feed - grazing, dried and in cut and carry systems.
Target # 2 Elementary, high school and college students who may want to grow Leucaena as a class or individual project for school, scouts or 4 H
Target # 3 Local craftsmen who may want to grow Leucaena as a source of seeds for beads
Target #4 Local Entrepreneurs who may want to get involved in developing a Leucaena project for profit
Target #5 Worldwide entrepreneurs, farmers, and others who would like to develop Leucaena based industries
Target # 6 Environmentalists already interested in carbon sequestration, the KYOTO Protocol and saving rain forest
Target # 7 Anyone with whom you would like to share information about Leucaena
Let's assume you want to target anyone who might have an interest in Leucaena. The following scenario assumes you are attempting to share information with anyone, and when special groups develop you will develop specialized information for each.
Write down the following things on a one page plan.
1. How much time you plan to spend
2. How much money you want to spend
3. What your goals are in sharing information about Leucaena
4. What your areas of Leucaena expertise are

1. Contact the government office of forestry and agricultural development in your country for names of people interested in Leucaena from your local area
2. Contact your local county extension office
3. Attend any Leucaena plantings and harvests in your area
4. Write up a Leucaena FAQ based on the knowledge you have about Leucaena
5. Take photos of any Leucaena planting you may find
6. Provide seed packets to local schools, women's' group and youth groups for test plantings
7. Write articles and submit press releases to local papers
8. Put together a local farmer forum on Leucaena
10. Speak at any Leucaena activities and forums in your local area.
1. Make your own Leucaena planting, no matter how small
2. Develop a Leucaena growing project for 4-H or your local school - donate seeds and serve as a volunteer in the classroom or in 4-H
3. Write and submit photos, press releases and articles to your local newspaper
4. Publish your own Leucaena newsletter
5. Develop a Leucaena mailing list and send Leucaena oriented cards
6. Develop a card update program for your mailing list.
1. Hold a Leucaena seminar on the internet
2. Develop a Leucaena Online newsletter
3. Establish a Leucaena Information Center
4. Put together and hang a Leucaena web page. Visit LPS's Leucaena WebPage . If you are viewing this document as a web page you may click to the document. If you are not viewing a WebPage you may go to:
5. Develop an Online Leucaena information center
6. Develop a Leucaena electronic mailing list
7. Submit articles to LEUCAENA ONLINE, LPS's Online newsletter to honducopa@yahoo.com

2. Trying making handmade wood crafts from Leucaena and showing it to local schools and youth groups
3. Collect Leucaena product samples.
I want to see Leucaena reach its great potential. I will be willing to help anyone develop any of these Leucaena outreach items at a minimum fee to cover LPS's costs and expenses:
Please participating in the Leucaena Online Information Center by sending in your articles, research studies and Leucaena project information. Please send me by email to Exportfacs@aol.com or to our mailing address:
This website is also available on a 3 1/2 inch diskette, for viewing locally using Netscape or other browser by placing this disk into the a drive, bringing up Netscape and using open file. When the window opens, go to the a prompt and select index. the file will open up and you can read it.
The LPS has already been involved in each of these activities and will share the materials LPS used. Also, if you would like to develop your own local or internet Leucaena outreach, LPS will be happy to assist with clip art, etc.
Conclusion: Leucaena's potential is great. Want to ensure that Leucaena becomes the tree species of choice for carbon sequestration and ameliorating greenhouse gases and stopping global warming?
Then it is up to those of us who are involved with Leucaena to promote and publicize it in the local area. If several hundred people who believe in Leucaena's potential develop similar outreaches, Leucaena will be well on its road to its great future by the year 2010.
Want to try growing Leucaena on a small plot and finding out if it will grow in your area or your country? EXPERIMENT! GROW A TEST PLOT! Experiment with Leucaena growing, utilization and seeds by getting the Leucaena Experiment Kit.
