La Esperanza is high in the Western Mountains of Honduras. There are no gangs and women can walk at night without fear. In the history of La Esperanza, there is memory of only one robbery of a store. It is a town of Lenca Indians, who live tranquil lives enjoying their high mountain life. Because of the climate which is never hot, there are very few insects, no diseases such as malaria and no parasites. It is a mountain paradise. Young people here go to Tegucigalpa or San Pedro Sula and study to become lawyers even if they have no interest. That is because as a licensado(lawyer) they can come back to La Esperanza and work for the government. They do not want to live in Tegucigalpa or San Pedro, preferring the safe, low key life style of La Esperanza.
La Esperanza is in the middle of pine forests. There is not a single factory here. The Lencas are historically farmers. Because of a multinational company in the area, trees are being cut down. As a result, tree planting has become the superordinate goal of the Liga Menor.
The road to La Esperanza offers spectacular mountain forest view. Deep canyons and mountains so high the clouds reach the ground. To keep Intibuca green and beautiful, the Liga Menor has adopted as its major project, the replanting of the forests of Intibuca. All of the players in the Liga Menor are required to plant trees.
Here are some photos of the beautiful cloud forests of Intibuca.
