How & Why To Become A Intibucá Soccer Volunteer

A Thousand Years Of Light Begin With A Single Candle. Light That Candle. Be That Candle.

Why Become A Intibucá Soccer Volunteer?

How To Apply For A Program

A. What You Give

Why volunteer? Why give? The need we all have is to give our life meaning. We want to know how our presence on the Earth can have an effect on the lives of others. We need to have a superordinate goal. A goal to give. you see when we give, it means that we believe we have something of value to offer the world. We believe that what we do can affect not only a single person but our entire world.

Let's look at this. What if you come to Honduras and coach a kid in Intibucá? What can that matter? It just a kid in a developing country? What is that child grows up to be a priest who eventually becomes the Pope. How much affect could he have. Or perhaps he becomes a doctor and discovers a plant which can cure cancer. Or perhaps he just become a good citizen and does not become an illegal alien in the USA? Isn't that of value in itself?

When I was nine years old, a speaker came to my school from Africa and talked about how the forest was being destroyed. Someday there will be a great drought and many people will die. Because of him, I became a plant ecologist. Because of this one time event, my life was changed. He affected all the people with whom I have come in contact with since.

What you give is the self esteem that these kids need. Many of them come to practice and even play in games that their parents never see. That means they feel that all their hard work is not valued by their parents. But you can build their self esteem just by coming and coaching. Realize what this means - Someone came for thousands of miles just to teach them soccer.

What you give is the skills of soccer their coaches simply do not have the ability to give them. Most of the coaches have never had even one day of coaching training. They do not know how to teach the skills they want the kids to have. So when the kids do not perform well in the game they yell at them and berate them. You can teach the kids soccer skills because in countries like the USA, Canada and Europe, coaching training is readily available.

What you give is the building of a soccer community. You let both the players and the coaches know that there is a world outside the mountains of Intibucá. Most of the youth come from families that grow potatoes, vegetables and work on farms. Most have never been outside Intibucá. You bring the world outside to them so they open their horizons to the world of soccer.

When You Change The World For One Child, You Affect The Whole World

An Intibucá Soccer Volunteer might teach one kid who is on the verge of taking drugs, or dropping out of school. Who knows how that can affect the family, then the community, the city, the state, the nation, the world.

B. What You Get

You GET The Power To Change The World!

Want to be a life changer, a person who mentors and gives recognition? You will give these children the most powerful thing we all want - Recognition. You will be empowered to change a life. You will understand your own worth because you will see that your words and deeds have the power to change the inner beliefs of these kids.

You Become The Most Important Person In The World To The Children Of Intibucá.

Just by being a coach from another country you become a celebrity. Kids will come to practice who have not come for weeks. Because you bring the most important part of their lives to them. Kids will hang on your every word. Kids will listen to you,

Your self esteem will be raised because you are giving of yourself. You discover you have something to offer. You have an exciting cross cultural experience, make friends for a lifetime and become part of the true soccer community we are creating here.

You gain skills you can use later in your family, career, community and world. That's because you will be getting on the job mentoring while you are coaching and training. Evening sessions are held to discuss successes and problems.

You enjoy interacting with the many cultures in Intibucá, Lenca, Mayan, Eramani, and Latino as well as the expatriate culture. In addition you will visit local sites such as pre-Columbian sites, colonial churches, public pools and other local projects.

You make a contribution to the soccer program of the youth of Intibucá. You are unique and what you bring to the program is different than any other coach. We are seeking to develop a soccer program in Intibucá that is developing a whole new way of learning and playing soccer. That means we are going to need to bring every different soccer tradition in the world to Intibucá. So every coach that comes brings something new to the table. YOU BRING YOUR OWN UNIQUE LIFE EXPERIENCES, EDUCATION AND LIFE GOALS TO THE YOUTH OF Intibucá. No one else can share what you can.

You enjoy the wonderful, cool temperate climate of Intibucá. You train your soccer kids in soccer fields surrounded by pine forests. The air is clean because there are no factories of any kind. Intibucá is a forest and agricultural state. You eat fresh vegetables and fruits from the local fields. You walk safe streets at night. From La Esperanza you can see the El Peten Volcano in El Salvador. You enjoy picnics under bromeliad laden pine trees. It's the vacation of a lifetime. And you enjoy all this while you make a unique contribution to the soccer youth of Intibucá.
