Achieving Sustainable Development Through LeadershipA Project Of MOTILESTogether We Can Replant Our Planet, and Restore The World ForestSustainable Tropical Agriculture Is Basic To Sustainable DevelopmentHow Can Sustainable Development Be Obtained? Read MOTILES Sustainability VisionThe Vital Mission Of Sustainable Economic DevelopmentSustainable Economic Development through Soccer Tourism, Ecotourism, and sustainable agriculture worldwide is the most important mission of the International Sports Adventure Institute, Inc. Key components include SATReal Analysis, ECOSAT Design, and SATReal Tourism Project Consultancy. Enter the new field of Leucaena Effect Agroforestry. including Enviroadventure (ecotourism, agricultural tourism, and Soccer Tourism combined into a sustainable tourism complex) by joining the YAHOO discussion list Enviroadventure. No matter how successful a development method, if it cannot be sustained for long periods of time, it is not viable. When we look at the deserts of the Middle East today we remember the Biblical story of the "Land of Milk and Honey". The Middle East was once highly productive. Now many ecosystems are degraded and sustains only goats, camel and sheep. The Pampas of Argentina, the plains of Mongolia, the East African Veldt, the rainforests of Central and South America, are all threatened with destruction. Every day species we have never even seen or cataloged go extinct. There are now over 6 billion humans. How can we feed all of these people and yet maintain our earth? How can we balance the need for economic development with the requirement that we preserve our Earth's ecosystems for our own survival. It is necessary to apply sustainable development methods for self defense. Some Articles on Community Consortiums For Sustainable Development
Sustainable development can only occur as the result of the creation of a worldwide caring community. A community of people who are working together for common ends and to meet the basic needs of all our people. It can only occur when we find the "One Point of Mutual Agreement" in every situation;. When we see it is in all of our self interest to create a world where we all have our basic needs met. Sustainable development cannot and will not occur if 150,000,000 street children roam the cities seeking to eat from garbage cans while others live the lives of kings and queens. It is simply a matter of equity. When there is such disparity in the availability of basic needs, there will be conflict. A world in conflict cannot become sustainable. How do we develop a world that is capable of becoming sustainable?First of all, it begins in the local community. That is the only place development can take place. And in order for a community to move toward sustainability, we must provide those in our world with the four things we must all have to be potentiated. That requires the skills of leadership to be developed within the community. What Is The True Role of The Leader? There is a dream hidden in the hearts of everyone reading this website. It's a dream of finding a leader who will meet our needs. We all want a person we can put our trust in, believe in, and work alongside to achieve a shared vision. A leader you dream about is one who would make you feel safe, who will provide a group where you can grow, learn and be accepted. It would be a person who would mentor you and help you to become a leader just like this role model. What do we need in order to feel safe? What can our leaders give us? We need:
It could also involve being willing to provide leadership to others. A leadership example is to become an officer in a local community group. There is no pay, long hours, lots of dedication, and often giving up of evenings, weekends, and other free time. The goal is to help others gain the skills of communication, leadership, and organization. The kinds of leaders that we have determine our quality of life. A leader is the key guide for gaining the above four vital components of safety in our lives. Every day you hear on the TV talk programs about a lack of real leadership. Yet so-called leaders stride across the landscape, making promises they know they cannot keep and telling us things that are at most only partially true. What is a leader and why do we need herm anyway? We're Americans. We have a high standard of living. We are free people, right? We don't need leaders? Or do we? What is Leadership?Leadership is inspiring others to be better than they ever knew they could, to achieve more than they ever knew they could achieve, and to experience more fulfillment than they ever knew they could. Let's take sports for example. Lots of leadership is required in sports. I am a football fan. No one can deny the power of John Elway as a true leader. Another leader is a person like Peyton Manning. Peyton inspires the members of his team to do more than they normally could. He leads by example and by believing in his team. We're educated, we can read, and we know how to find information. We can always go to the library and check out books. Or we can talk to an expert. We can watch over 200 channels on TV, many of them educational. All the information we need is on the internet, in the library, on cassettes or videos. We can find step-by-step guidelines to do just about anything we want to do. We can make our own decisions. We know how to work the marvelous useful tools of our culture. In our home computer alone, we have more power than the kings of olden times. So why do we need leaders? What is it that leaders provide that we need so desperately? Why not do away with leaders altogether? What Do Leaders Really Provide? Let's examine it a little closer. Why do we crave leadership? What does a leader really provide for his followers? What do leaders do for us that make them vital for our own personal potentiation and for our success in our lives? Leaders:
What is the Responsibility of a Leader? There is a saying in the military, "Rank has its privileges - Rank has its responsibilities." Leaders have many responsibilities. They have responsibilities to themselves to live up to their own standards, and responsibilities to their followers to set a good example for them. Responsibilities that leaders have to their followers may include:
The second vital thing leaders provide is that they tell us what we can do. Leaders are the keepers of our "permitteds." What are permitteds and what do they matter in our lives? About Permitteds Permitteds relate to the different ways we have of knowing. There are several ways of knowing or storing and using information. A. Stored Information 1) Your Mind Your mind includes the things you know that could be performed. You may also know what has to be done to perform an action. Knowing is the actual chemicals or memory items stored in your brain. It includes long-term memory. This is your mental storage. You can recall many stored facts and tidbits of information. You can also recall things you have been drilled in such as the multiplication tables as well as the results of momentary trauma such as rape, blows, insults to your pride, self-esteem lowering or self-esteem building. You can recall how people you loved looked or even how it felt when they hugged you. You can also remember a humiliating experience you have had, how you felt, and how the people looked when they laughed at you. Your mind stores your surface memory, your short-term memory, and your long-term memory. You may or may not know what to do with them. You may or may not choose to use them. 2) In the Minds of Other People Much of what you will use in working with the Sustainable SAT Economy is stored in the minds of other people. Only when you learn how to tap into the rich sources in other people's minds will you be an "Expanding Permitteds" leader. There is knowledge and experience stored in each person. To be a leader is to be able to tap into other people's know-how, knowledge, and skills. 3) In Electronic or Print Media Today, just about everything anyone needs to know is stored in books, newspapers, and printed media of all kinds. It is on the internet, on web pages, cassettes, and videos. It requires you to gain the skill of obtaining, accessing, evaluating, and transforming this material into a usable form for your people. You'll need to master the skills of using a VCR, computer, online media, etc. B. Body Memory Knowledge is stored in your body in the form of skills or know-how. The things you know how to do such as gardening, tying shoes, driving a car, making a flip chart, drinking water, playing an instrument, shooting a basket, making a design or planting a tree. These skills have been developed from years of repetition and practice. There is no substitute for drill. Usually learning any of these skills is a matter of will. You decide you will learn them, and then you are able to discipline yourself to do the necessary drudgery or practice to learn them. They are important to you. Leadership is how you tap into the skills of your own body as well as the body memory of others. Learning to communicate within the Sustainable SAT Economy involves you as leader to find out what mind and body memory skills others have and use them in the projects you design. The more you tap into these mind-and-body memory skills the more resources you access and the more successful you can be as a leader. Leaders can show you, through demonstration, presentations, and fun times that your stress level also influences your "permitteds." There is a statement, "You are what you eat." When your diet is wholesome, exercise routines are regular, and relationships become appropriate, you will have reduced a lot of stress in your life. Since stress negatively influences your "permitteds," you can get more upbeat when you reduce the stresses in your life. YOUR INTRINSIC VALUE The combination of your mind memory and your body memory are the value that you have to your organization. This is your intrinsic value to the group. Of course everyone has the intrinsic value of being born on our Earth and is thus an Earth citizen. But in the business context, we are talking about the return on investment that we, as leaders, get from the people in our work groups. To maximize productivity we are going to have to look at the person's intrinsic value as to what they already know how to do. To create Synergistic Productivity in the Sustainable SAT Economy, we are going to have to open ourselves to other Mind Clones as having valuable skills and know-how to enhance production in SAT business. Additionally, as leaders we need to look at our people in terms of their growth capacity. We not only want to use what they have right now. We want to increase their creative capacity, productivity capacity, and giving capacity. So leaders must evaluate their employees both in terms of where they are this minute and where they can be in the future. C. Permission Memory Your permission memory is what other people in your life history have placed into your memory about what you are allowed to do. Permission memory is based on your Perceived Value. Your perceived value is based on the information stored in your mind and body memory and how you have evaluated what it means or generalized what it means. Information that is stored in your body and mind memory includes actual data, mistaken information, and filtered perceptions of your innerness. What people told us or didn't tell us, did for us or didn't do for us, that we accepted and didn't accept, all influence what is in our permission memory. What we learned of language, literacy and integrative skills is in our mind memory. What we practiced right, incorrectly or didn't practice is in our body memory. Both body and mind memory affect the permission memories and add to what you believe you are able to perform or what you give yourself permission to perform. What is stored in your permission memory especially affects what you believe about your capacity. What you feel about your personal value and worth was implanted in your permission memory through all your interactions with the environment, especially people interactions. As a result of your interpersonal history, you have deep beliefs about your relationships, your present capabilities, and your abilities. You may have positive or negative ideas of how your interpersonal relationships will work out. At work, this may lead to a lowered capacity to work in groups or on teams. You may be so tied up with "do they accept me" "or "do they like me" that you cannot concentrate on the job at hand. You will not be able to maximize your productivity in the work environment if you have these "old tapes" running around in your head. Once you see what effect you have on the persons and objects in your environment and on the environment, it is perpetuated in your decisions and actions. You basically learn what you have permission to and not to do. You learn your "place" and the "place" of others in relationship to you. You learn your place in the social structure. Therefore you find out what your "Permitteds" are. YOUR PERMITTEDS ADD UP TO BE YOUR SELF-ESTEEM LEVELS The people and environmental inputs you have experienced become your reality defined for you. Since as a baby you came in as a blank slate, the bonding with the first people you interact with defines a great deal or your innerness. You learn what is okay for you to have. Do you deserve to be warm, to have enough food, to have people come and hold you when you need it? Or, do you deserve to be cold, to be hungry, to have pain, to be hurt? You learn, from what happens to you, what is okay for you to have and to do and what you should feel about those things. You learn what you can do, how you should talk, and how you should act. You learn the things you are allowed the do, the kind of career you can start, and the way your family is to be operated. You learn how your children should be treated and relationships between males and females. You learn all the aspects of how your life should go day by day and the conditions under which you will still be okay. The fact is our family culture, our school culture, our work culture, our societal culture, and our national culture have all worked together to shape our permitteds. What's more, you generalize these rules that are accepted in that small universe for you into the larger universe. Because our infants and children are helpless for a number of years and therefore need adults, the things learned are ground deeply into the body and mind memory. In the actual brain, the memory RNA strands are created. Why do we use only 10 % of our brain capacity? We are hurt so often and given so many don'ts and no's as a child that we feel we don't have permission to continue our childhood creativity. We are so focused on getting attention, being OK, or being acceptable, that we can't use our memories to learn more. We perceive our value or worth by what we feel we are permitted to do. We operate our lives by what our permitteds are and what we perceive as our value or worth. Our self-esteem is equal to our Perceived Value to our world. CAN WE AS LEADERS EXPAND THE PERMITTEDS OF OUR PEOPLE? The goal of a leader in a SAT business is to maximize the return of investment to the corporation of the people hesh is leading. Thus the more you can expand the permitteds of your people, the more they can contribute to the corporate bottom line. LEADERS GIVE US OUR PERMITTEDS! They enable us to actually perform what our bodies and minds know how to do. A counselor asked a person to act like a brave actor. He acted out the part. Then the counselor said, "See, you know how to be that way." But the person responded by saying, "But, that isn't me! I can't be that way." Leaders enable us to do what we already know how to do. Leaders are also the holders or the transmitters that transfer to us new permitteds. They give us permission to perform. They tell us it is okay to do what we know how to do. They tell us what we can do and still belong to the group, still be bonded, still have community, structure, meaning and a superordinate goal. Leaders are the articulators of who we are permitted to be. We have all encountered areas where we were not permitted to perform even though we may have had the skills. Only as our permitteds are expanded can we be all that we can be and offer all that we have to offer to the corporation. What is needed in the SAT business is a group of leaders who understand how to "Expand Permitteds" of the employees at all levels. IT'S TIME TO FACILITATE COMMUNITY LEADERS IN "EXPANDING PERMITTEDS" So leaders give us our permitteds. They enable us to actually perform what our minds and bodies know how to do. They give us permission to perform. They tell us how to be okay. Do you work in a community organization or non profit organization? What are the written and unwritten rules of behavior? Who is asked to join certain work groups? Who gets to work on certain key projects? Who is asked to eat lunch with special visitors? Who is given a fair shake? It has been said that a competent woman, performing the same job as a man, will receive only 78% of his salary performing the same work. Why is this acceptable? Because the leaders of your corporation establish this as one of the permitteds of the men in the company. With the coming of the Sustainable SAT Economy, you may think all these inequities have been eliminated. Not by a long shot. Mind Cloning including sexism, ethnic and racial prejudice is expanding as never before. There is lip service in some corporations. Other SAT business are working to open up more permitteds for workers. However, in the past all these SAT business were free to discriminate. As a result in some there is a pattern of problems, a list of permitteds that are unwritten rules of behavior. In the past it was permitted to discriminate against disabled people or people in wheelchairs. Many offices of government were not even accessible to people who were not able to walk. Now we are required to make wheelchair ramps and other accessories needed to make offices more accessible to all workers and customers. Wheelchair ramps and other resources are now required routinely, along with special parking spaces. This means that we have "Expanded Permitteds" for physically challenged, often called disabled, people. Women can be far more ruthless in combat that men. But no matter how strong or how good a marksman they have become, and no matter how skillful an infighter, they are not permitted to be infantry soldiers. They are "not permitted" to function in that role. Permitteds are the key to how a person can perform in a society. So leaders articulate our permitteds and that is their main function. The way they articulate our permitteds varies from encouragement to exhortation, from demands to punishment. There are many ways discrimination is shown, but it all amounts to the same thing. Leaders tell us what we can do, who we can be and what tasks and roles in our culture we are allowed to take on. Leaders are cultural banks at the same time they are cultural investors. They are also cultural inventors and creators. They save the parts from the past permitteds. Each leader adds hes own stamp on the permitteds of an organization. Whether it is a leader like Tom Watson at IBM or Bill Gates at Microsoft, leaders tell us who we can and cannot be. Business leaders create SAT business and stamp them with their personal codes of ethics and core value systems. They have more power than did an ancient Pharaoh of Egypt. The rulers of Ancient Egypt could not create new permitteds. The Pharaoh Akhenaton was killed for trying to change the permitteds of the people. He promulgated one God, a God of love. He was killed for this heresy. It was not a permitted. The woman Pharaoh, Hatshepsut, was killed for daring to take the Role of Pharaoh and rule in her own name. It just wasn't a "permitted". And the Pharaoh could not change that. He or she was a static leader, bound by the traditions of the past. The holders of tradition did not have the ability to expand their permitteds, and the followers did not have their permitteds expanded. Jesus of Nazareth's entire program was about expanding the permitteds of his followers. He said, "The works that I do, you can do also." He was seen to be so dangerous that he was killed. Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus' apostles, became the apostle of the apostles. She provided the financing for Jesus for the three years of his ministry. She was vital in the development of the early Christian church, which had women leaders as well as disciples. Instead of her story being told to girls to empower them, she has been promulgated as the woman caught in adultery. She was never found in any such condition. This is an outright lie. But this story has been used against girls and women for generations. The woman reported as caught in adultery was an entirely different woman. Mary Magdalene's true nature was deliberately destroyed by the patriarchal church fathers. The Catholic Church later repressed this vibrant "Expanding Permitteds" culture. It began contracting the permitteds of women and others, which was finally culminated in the Spanish Inquisition, when they didn't permit just about everything. The scientist Copernicus was ostracized because he said the earth goes around the sun. The idea wasn't permitted in his time. We Need True Leadership True leadership focuses on increasing and widening permitteds. True leadership seeks to potentiate all members of the group. It focuses on opening up wider horizons. It provides means and support to open up new ways of doing and being. It gives followers the permission to potentiate. This brand of leadership is facilitated through self-esteem building. Self-esteem is built through open communication, person to person, in groups, in larger forums and in presentation modes. Leaders Need Communication Skills Leaders who want to open permitteds must gain skills in all aspects of communication. First the leader defines an ever-widening array of permitteds for hes followers. The next step is to communicate to the followers the nature of the new "permitteds." Then their leader needs to offer resources for them to gain the skills needed to expand their capabilities and thus their value to the firm. When we are providing leadership in the Sustainable SAT Economy, we will be required to change the inner beliefs of mainstream workers. Without changing the inner beliefs of mainstream workers, other ethnic customers and workers will not be able to practice and perfect what they have learned. And, if not, then your firm will not get its return on investment (ROI) from these workers of from these customers as Word of Mouth Ambassadors. And your SAT business will not be able to increase its competitiveness through Synergistic Productivity. You are going to need a complete system to introduce these "New Permitteds" to your workforce. As a leader you will want to open new horizons for all the people in the workforce and customer base. You as a leader want to maximize the firm's return on investment. It will not be long before excellent productivity among work groups will be the basis for your successful development of your SAT business. Your workers in your SAT business must maximize the quality and quantity of the work. In addition, as our culture becomes more and more technically complex, your workgroup members will be expected to constantly master new skills. They will have to become peer tutors and coaches for other members at the same level as well as those at subordinate levels. There is so much new information that you have no choice but to begin making all of your corporate employees peer coaches, presenters, and trainers for members of your workgroups. Therefore you will need the skills of leadership. Increasing productivity may very well depend on your capabilities to expand the permitteds of your workers. The skills of communication will be vital for transferring these expanded permitteds to the followers. And you'll have to provide the available resources. You are going to need to provide methods and resources needed for building these skills and the environment where they can expand their permitteds. There is another complicating factor you will have to face as a leader in a SAT business in the 21st century. It's the complicating factor of the worldwide ethnic groups from which you will be drawing your customers. You will be bringing in customers from new populations: women, minorities, and immigrants, many of whom do not communicate in English very well. It will be your responsibility, your requirement as a leader, to find ways to open their permitteds and communicate that opening to them. You will profit from these new populations as they learn to enjoy the Power of Sport and the Thrill of Sports Adventure. You will have to find ways to transfer peer coaching and mentoring know-how to your workers about dealing with all kinds of customers. You will have to develop methods of teaching them to communicate, not only across areas of technical specialties but across Sustainable SAT and cross-cultural barriers as well. It's going to be required for SAT business leaders from the work floor to the soccer field to see that the 21st century is the century where the workforce is truly freed. You will have to allow all your Sustainable SAT Economy staff to expand their permitteds in order to enhance the core values, mission and bottom line of the SAT business in which they work. You have a great deal of power in your role as leader in a 21st century SAT business. Learn the skills of leadership and create a community within your organization. Expand the permitteds of your workforce and you will find an ever-increasing return on investment. You can create Synergistic Productivity with potential positive impact on your bottom line. To survive in the business flood of new SAT businesses that will be developing, you will need to create a committed workforce. That means you have to open creativity and power to everyone. Your people want to work for you, want to believe in you, want to be committed to you. Your role as leader is to tell them they are permitted to do so. What Is the History of Permitteds in Our Culture? When cultures spend all their time contracting and restricting permitteds for some of its members but opening and offering more and more permitteds for others, it is creating the seeds of self-destruction. Up until now, the Sports Adventure Tourism world has had four basic populations:
SAT Businesses Will Be Expanding WorldwideI am focusing on the world of the SAT businesses because my prediction is that within 50 years, SAT businesses will be developing worldwide. SAT will be the combined with ecotourism will be the major type of tourism. all over our planet, people will actively in involved in SAT activities. How much impact can our planet take. All of us will be working in this environment. My goal is to help these SAT businesses understand the importance of expanding the permitteds for all their employees so they can develop sustainable businesses and work with other businesses in SATBIs and other community consortiums. Let's look at an analogy. If one part of the body is diseased, how long will it take before the infection spreads to all parts of the body? Intervention with antibiotics soon enough can prevent the spread of the disease. Antibiotics attack the source of the infection. Sustainable SAT Communication is designed to attack the source of inequality so that all workers can be released of the "disease" and freed to focus their creativity on their work. In the past few hundred years, as the SAT world developed, most of the practicioners and customers of SAT businesses came from one population. You as a SAT business project with a new activity center could determine who got a chance to participate. They mainly came from the Nonadversity opportunity class of white native born males. But by the year 2050, the population of the United States will include only 52% of white native born people. That means only 25% of the population will be white males. This means that SAT businesses must move into other classes to obtain its customers. They are already opening up more and more opportunities to experience SAT to adversity opportunity populations such as white women and selected minority people. But in order to be competitive in the 21st century, SAT businesses will have to delve deeply into adversity nonopportunity populations and even into the oppressed populations for its workers. That means that 21st century SAT leaders are going to have to have ways already in place for two vital areas of expertise.
In this Special Report you can find many ways to increase the permitteds in your workforce by helping them build self-esteem. You also find ways of creating communication and presentation methods for cross-cultural communication. You can now use the power of true leadership. You are empowered to develop communication skills. You can then create a corporate culture that enhances your bottom line. At the same time you can use peer tutoring and cross training routinely to reach and release the potential of all your workers. You can use the different communication skills in many ways:
Why do we as leaders want to widen the permitteds of our people? The more permitteds our SAT workers have, the more creative they can be. Then the more hours they are likely to be actively committed to your work. The result will be more loyalty to your SAT project. The more loyalty to the your SAT project, the more employees are able to positively impact others in the workforce. And this leads them to care about the service delivery from the company. The more employees that care the more customers that are satisfied. The more customer satisfaction, the greater your profits. SAT business hire people to make a profit on them. When they pay employees $10,000, they want to make $30,000 on that employee. The company adds in a benefit package, which costs a lot for every employee on your payroll. They have overhead and dividends to pay. You cannot afford any deadwood. Every employee must make a profit for you. You have a tremendous investment in your employees, your physical plants and all your other outputs. The goal of every corporation is to maximize its return on investment (ROI). These expensive employees need to be turned into profit centers for the firm. They are the resources the firm has for making a profit and staying in business. The more you expand their permitteds the more value they have to you and thus the more profit they can produce for the SAT business. When your sales force is well trained in all aspects of making presentations, as well as interpersonal communication, they will move more freely with customers including Sustainable SAT customers, so they become mentally in tune. They will be able to easily form rapport, move seamlessly and effortlessly with the customer and find out what hesh wants before the customer hermself knows by using body language cues. When you set up a program to build the self-esteem of your sales force, for example, and they internalize their true worth, they are better able to sell because they know they are offering something good to their customers. Remember the role of the leader is
The "Expanding Permitteds' Sustainable SAT Communication Program Is An Open Ended, Communication-Rich Leadership Solution for the 21st Century SAT business During the 21st century, more and more SAT business are going to be affected by the need for sustainability. SAT business will need to find new and innovative solutions. They will need to develop communication systems to express their core values and corporate goals. SAT business are going to need forums, membership organizations and even chapters and groups where employees can discuss their problems with their peers. This issue is so vital that those who want to enhance their bottom lines using the Sustainable SAT Economy will need to find ways for expanding permitteds for their workforce. The survival of a SAT business in the 21st century may depend upon our top management's willingness to become "Expanding Permitteds" leaders. They are going to understand the new realities of creating community-based workgroups. They will begin to see that such workgroups must increase their productivity by actively building self-esteem on the work floor. In order to create Synergistic High Productivity, group members will need to build each other's self esteem. By doing so and flowing into confluence with others, the level of production per worker will soar. You see even on the work floor, all your workers can seek the one point of mutual agreement in every situation. That means a higher and more effective production. The Sustainable SAT Century Requires the Development of Leadership The problem of developing sustainability in the 21st Century require all of us to work together, to develop programs of mutual support and potentiation. We need leaders who know how to develop teams, to provide coaching and mentoring instead of domination. We need leaders to build our self-esteem so we can be all that we can be. Yet our leaders are mired down in self-esteem destruction and seeking to raise themselves above their employees to build their own sense of power. Remember most of us have been trained to be negatively Mind Clonish. This is especially true of members of the mainstream culture. White males have been carefully socialized to believe in the inferiority of other Mind Clones. Our history books extol the history of America as a group of democracy-focused people fighting for their rights. Our history books and our movies show savage Indians attacking innocent settlers. The fact is, the settlers were the intruders, and ruthless conqueror soldiers, better armed and in massive numbers, simply destroyed innocent people who already had a democracy. The very idea of democracy was developed from the Iroquois Confederacy. Treaty after treaty was signed and broken by the conquerors. Land promised was routinely taken away and given to white settlers. So that those white males would not have to deal with these realities, a deliberate misinformation program was given so their continuing repression could be internally justified. Most mainstream white males have been programmed to believe in the inferiority of Other Mind Clones. In order to work in the Sustainable SAT Economy, these erroneous inner beliefs must be changed. This will require great inner strength and dedication to the welfare of the SAT business to change this error thinking. Remember this, whatever you as a mainstream manager, team leader, or worker feel about Sustainable SAT people, it is not what you really think. The ideas you carry in your brain about Sustainable SAT workers have been handed down from father to son in the form of propagated Memory Chips. It goes all the way back to the Pleistocene. It's an issue you as a manager of the Sustainable SAT Economy must face. Do you want to stay the same as you have been programmed? Do you want, indeed, can you afford to stay like your ancestors? Can the SAT business afford managers who operate in the same old ruts that we had in the Pleistocene? In those days we used outer covering, hair color, hairstyles, and other external survival cues to decide whether to kill or keep. This is the same thing that Tyrannosaurus Rex used. His reptilian hindbrain had all the information he needed. He didn't need to think or decide about others. Enemy or foe? He didn't even have to ask himself how he felt about another organism. His reptilian hindbrain did his thinking for him. Just a little bit of a search image and his body automatically reacted. We are already programmed by the time we start working in a SAT business Is this Mind Clonish thinking about customers who are a bit different in skin color or culture where we need to concentrate or attention to be able to compete in the Sustainable SAT century? We have competitors worldwide for the goods and services your SAT business offers. Can we afford workers who react like robots about other Mind Clones? We are marketing globally to people of all colors, ages, genders, gender orientation, races and religions. Are these old programs appropriate for maximum competitive power in the 21st century? Do you want workers who were programmed by their families, friends, and our culture to make these hindbrain decisions? When you hire a software engineer from India, you chose herm because of hes skills and capabilities. Can you afford to have hes productivity lowered because of hes treatment by someone who thinks like a T-Rex, operating on survival cues? If your workers don't think for themselves, they will react with the same old program. Did you hire their grandfather? Do you want your office or production plant operated by the program they have been given by their parents, their grandparents, and their great-grandparents? Can you afford to run a corporation in the computer and internet century with people who are programmed to live the lives of people who lived in the 12th century and earlier? Your workers' feelings about other Mind Clones are not their feelings but the feelings of those who programmed them. The way your workers feel about people of other races, ages, religions, and gender are not their ideas. They didn't think these ideas up. Very few of them have done extensive library research about other ethnic groups, for example, then set out to make reasonable logical decisions about each person of that particular race. All the things they think about Blacks, Hispanics, Chinese, or Arabs, have been fed into their brain in the form of memory chips. They have been told by their parents, the TV, the books they read, the school yard, the textbooks, the culture itself just what these people are really like. They never got to choose what information went into their brains. How many of you were asked at a birth what you wanted to believe about people of other races? It wasn't done that way. You were fed these ideas when you were incapable of discrimination or evaluation. You were a sponge, eager for all inputs to fill your open system. All your life you have heard the "truths" that you believe now about other Mind Clones. It doesn't matter if it's that you can't trust anyone over 30 or you can't trust anyone under 30. You think that, because someone else said it, you recorded it, and now you say it or think it. Leadership is needed to help these workers change their inner beliefs about other Mind Clones. Leaders give us our permitteds. You as a leader will determine a great deal about how productive your Sustainable SAT Economy is. If you set out to be open to other Mind Clones and understand how to change your own inner beliefs, you will be willing to work with your fellow workers to change their inner beliefs. It is up to you to establish the environment in which you expand the permitteds of all your workers. You will be responsible for ensuring that your mainstream workers learn the importance of creating community, building self-esteem and working in synergy with all members of your work groups. You will carry on an ongoing program of changing their inner beliefs about Sustainable SAT workers. You'll be responsible for opening the permitteds of your Sustainable SAT Economy workers to opportunities in which they can share what they know which will result in more productive work. We Need Leaders Who Care When our leaders do not satisfy our deepest need for caring, supportive guidance, support, and potentiation, we are off center. We aren't succeeding as much as we need to. We get hurt because we feel incompetent, stupid, or don't get the promotion or raise that we expected. We become Mind Clonish and seek to meet our needs in destructive ways. We indulge ourselves in destructive behavior. We may try to accumulate more than others do. We may fight wars to "take" resources from each other. We deliberately use the power of self-esteem destruction to feel better about ourselves. In doing this, we are destroying the workplace energy in our SAT business. Poor Leadership Can Lead To Extreme Negative Mind Cloning Poor leaders use deception, violence, intimidation, and even deliberate self-esteem stealing behaviors. We use our subordinates to build our self-esteem. Because poor leaders deliberately lower the self-esteem of others, they do not meet their workers' needs. We fight wars in our workplaces for territory. We stop thinking about productivity and think in terms of control and domination. We begin using our fellow workers and subordinates to create Mind Clonishness to have power. Because we do not receive our needed caring and supportive leadership, we often use destructive means to try to meet our needs. We are people of the community and in our evolutionary past, our great leaders gave us the belonging, the identity we needed. Who are we today? Where do we belong? Leaders articulate these visions for us. We have become dedicated to accumulation and consumerism, because we do not have the vision. What Is Self-Esteem And Why Is It So Important? Self-esteem is our permission to try, to achieve, and to reach out to our world. Self-esteem is not how smart you are, how pretty you are, nor how good an athlete you are. Self-esteem is your inner spiritual knowing of whom you are, what you have to offer the world, and your fight to share your gifts with your world. Many cultures indulge in self-esteem destructive behavior to prevent members of other groups from feeling free to share their gifts with the world. Racism, sexism ageism, worrying about people's gender or sexual preferences, are all tools to prevent people from feeling they have the permission to achieve. In some schools, fraternity members are allowed to drink even if there is a no drinking policy. They endanger people's lives through hazing. Fraternity members are given tacit permission to endanger others. What do leaders need to provide to their followers? Leaders are the keys to the personal success of their followers. In order to facilitate the growth of your followers, you need to establish the programs, methods and systems they need to maximize their productivity. Leaders facilitate productivity and enhance growth in followers as they:
That is why leaders are so important. Because of their status in our groups, they are the articulators of our permitteds. They can widen our permitteds by building our self-esteem. They can diminish our permitteds by lowering our self-esteem. They set the stage for behavior. In other words, they permit us to do things we would ordinarily not do. Let one killer appear and dozens of "look alikes appear." The police are permitted to disproportionately stop minority people. On any given day in the state of Florida, police routinely profile nonwhite people and take their hard-earned cash without even a receipt. The leaders of that state permit them or give them the right to do that. Everyone Needs to Examine Their Capabilities to Provide Leadership Imelda Shanklin once said, "You have the right to have honor, high self-esteem, integrity, loyalty, and honesty. But you can only expect to have these things if we provide them for yourself". We can provide these things in our world. If you do not provide it, expect others to let you down over an over again. If you want these important things in your life, then set out to develop yourself into a person who can provide them. If the leaders we have now do not meet our needs, then there is only one place to find the leadership we need. We have to develop those skills ourselves. You Are Already A Leader Everyone reading this book is already a leader. People are looking at you and discovering things they can and cannot do. They are seeing how you respond to other Mind Clones. They are watching to see how you respond to criticism. They are checking out how you handle adversity. They want to know how tenacious and persistent you are. When you perform, others watch. They see who and what you are. You are already a leader just by doing what you do every day. You Can Choose What Kind Of Leader You Need to Be You can choose to be the kind of leader we need for the ever more complex 21st century. A leader who cares, who provides the support our world is crying out for. We must seek ways to break down the barriers between us, to reach out to come into confluence with each other and to stop destroying our environment and thus lower our gain on our planet. We must come together to work together to create programs that emphasize our similarities rather than our difference. We need to begin creating a new culture, a Sustainable SAT Economy, high Sustainable SAT culture. This new culture will enable us to gain the skills we need to work together in groups, to build each other's self-esteem, and to develop an Expanding Permitted culture. Only as leaders give us the permission to come together, will this new Expanding Permitteds culture come into our SAT business. What Are the Responsibilities of a leader? To be a leader is to carry the hearts of our followers in our hands. We must handle them gently. One negative word from a leader, and a follower can be devastated. One positive word of encouragement can cause an employee to try again and eventually succeed. As leaders we have great power. But along with the power comes responsibilities. Some of the responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
You Can Become an Expanding Permitteds Leader Begin learning about leadership by utilizing the problem-solving method. Begin practicing the principles within your work groups, your meetings, your after-work community, and other groups. The success of our workgroups and indeed our SAT business lies in the hands of our leaders. It is not too late to correct our mistakes and to recognize our SAT business's survival will depend on all of our determination and ability to come together in harmony. It's time to deliberately find ways to work together and to share us together. Your 21st century workforce will require constant retooling and upgrading. In fact, you will be facing the challenges of how to make every one of your workers a successful communication nexus. There is an even greater complicating factor you will have to face as a SAT business leader in the 21st century. It's the complicating factor of diversity in your SAT customers. You will be attracting customers from new populations - women, minorities, and immigrants, many of whom do not communicate in English well. It will be your responsibility, your requirement as a leader to find ways to open their "Permitteds" and communicate that opening to them. It will profit you to find ways to transfer peer coaching and mentoring know-how to your workers. To succeed, you'll need to develop methods of teaching them to communicate, not only across areas of technical specialties but across Sustainable SAT and cross-cultural barriers as well. The 21st century is the century where the workforce can profitably "Expand Permitteds." That way it can support managers and enhance the core values, mission and bottom line of the SAT business. How can the problem solving method be used in developing Leadership Skills? Is there a need in your workgroup for ways to solve problems through better leadership? Are you on a special project team? Are you juggling many projects? Whatever you do, chances are you are involved with groups of others. In order to achieve your maximum productivity and achieve the goals of the group, your leadership is needed. Many leaders are not the formally labeled "leader", yet they do provide leadership. Maybe you are in a team or group that needs leadership because your group is not achieving as well as it needs to. You can apply the problem solving method to providing leadership for your group, even if you are not listed as leader. The Problem Solving Process consist of these components:
Learning to actively apply the Problem Solving Method requires more detailed step by step guidelines to help you every step of the way. You can find out about case studies and action plans for implementing this method in your workgroups. We are living in a new time in history. The old autocratic ways that served us before do not work well today. Many of the groups that make up the Sustainable SAT Economy simply will not produce your maximum results under leadership systems that lower their self esteem and do not allow them to grow. Let's take a look at these three interpersonal leadership styles: 1) Negativity or self esteem robbing leadership style
2. Mind Clone leadership style
3. The Expanding Permitteds leadership style
Let's take a closer look at each of these ways of leadership and how they affect your productivity. 1) Negativity or self esteem robbing leadership style If you use this leadership style, you are trying to make yourself feel good by putting others down. You hold grudges. You see everyone else as an enemy, a competitor, to be destroyed before he destroys you. If you are a woman, you immediately begin to put down any attractive woman you see especially if she is slimmer, younger, or more beautiful. If you are a man, you immediately see every other man as a rival and find ways to discredit them. You may tell lies about them, go behind their backs to make them look bad, and even set up situations where they are trapped into looking incompetent. You may even sabotage their work to make them fail. You do not fight fair, but rig the event so even if they are competent, they have no chance to win. If you are the head of a special project team in your corporation, for example, your major activity is to prevent others from having any real participation. You hug all the power to yourself. You only allow others to speak within a very narrow framework. You create the agenda, control what goes into it, and are inflexible about what should be discussed. An attempt by anyone in the committee to develop hes own capabilities is firmly controlled, even destroyed. You do not express any warmth toward committee members. And, you do nothing to build their self-esteem or sense of personal value. This kind of scenario is being played out in many SAT businesses as we read these words. And every time it happens, productivity goes down. Some situations might be:
